After the outbreak of World War I on July 28, 1914, Germany joined the war alongside its ally the Austro-Hungarian Empire on August 1, 1914. The alliance of the two states was already established on July 10, 1879. The Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Bulgaria later joined the alliance.
