After 20 years as a corporate lawyer, Andrew decided to do something interesting.

He started off writing walking guidebooks for other publishers. In 2018 he started Knife Edge Outdoor Guidebooks to design and publish better guidebooks.

All Knife Edge Outdoor Guidebooks have Real Maps (1:25,000 or 1:50,000) so there is no need to buy separate maps.

Andrew is from Northern Ireland but the Alps are his HAPPY PLACE. He loves trekking, mountain biking, labradors and brewing beer (in no particular order). Oh and he also loves Blink 182 which makes him feel like a teenager: sad but true!

Essential
Essential. ALL of the details we needed for planning our routes, info on the huts (and many other accommodations) along the way, weather, sites, equipment recommendations. Everything. In good detail. He breaks down the hike into 26 parts so you can add them together how you want (with example itineraries) - including/avoiding variants over passes, and tips on buses and gondola rides in places if you’re spent/weather turns/etc.

After looking over numerous options online, I selected this map for my TMB experience. I have to say it was easy to follow and seemed accurate with a slight exception that some of the hiking paths, reflect up and down switchbacks and in other areas they don't. After doing more than a few of these, you want to prepare for them and in some cases it turned out to be a surprise. Maybe I'm being too critical since this was my first major long distance hike in mountains. The ironic part is that this exact map was for sale in various stores in the towns along the route!!

This book was helpful in self planning our hike of the TMB. It includes detailed information on routes, varients, mileage, ascent and descent, along with some info on lodging. We will be bringing it with us on our tour this summer!

This book was VERY helpful in planning my TMB trek. The maps, explanations, info on variants, refuges etc. enabled me to make very detailed plans without paying an expensive planner.

This TMB guide is easy to read and reference on the go! I was very fortunate to have it during the planning stage of my hike and it served me well while on the TMB! The author, Andrew McCluggage, does an amazing job at breaking up the different segments of the trail and provide great commentary to help you plan your hike. Andrew is also a very active member of the TMB community, which shows in the level of insight provided in this guide.

Would recommend to anyone considering the TMB or even if you like day dreaming about the hike!

Nice map on the inside of the front cover. Good photos and useful tips. Now that I see some of the ascents/descents, probably will hold off a couple years to let my wife's knees heal more after surgery.

Every detail of my tour was planned by this book. You do not need an outside service to plan your trip if you have this book. A must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars 100% what I needed to plan.

Solo traveling a 14 day relaxed pace TMB in 2025, and this book includes all the information I need to plan my trek and do it in the hiking style that works best for me. 14 days is a bit unorthodox, but I love the mountains and wanted to have a few extra days to hang out. This guidebook & resource links helped me know where to best place these relaxed days. Thank you!

3.0 out of 5 stars Exaggerated claims

I had already walked the TMB before I bought this book. I was attracted to it because it offered (1) a full section on camping with a complete list of locations, (2) Real maps at 1:25000 scale, and (3) 10 exciting variants to the main route.
It fell short on all three benefits:
(1) there is a list of camp sites and even a few wild camping locations, but the list is far from complete. Several long-standing recognised sites do not get any mention.
(2) the maps (and the accompanying descriptions on which paths to take and where) are good as far as they go, but, presumably to save paper, they show only the routes, and none of the surrounding landscape. There is no way to understand what one is seeing either side of the track, which is fine if you're walking with blinkers on, but require one to carry another map to get the big picture.
The further consequences of the spartan provision of information means that one gets only what one needs to walk the tour, with no surplus material, history or background, which is fair enough.
(3) I already knew first-hand of 6 variants, so I assumed the extra 4 would cover some of those marked on my 1:50000 IGN map but not described in other guide books. I was disappointed to find that the 10 variants are in fact, 10 part-variants, so that there is only one part variant that I didn't already know.
On the plus side, the book has a nice feel, with luscious colour photos. The spartan nature of the content (see 2) might have kept the weight of the book down (useful if you're carrying a heavy pack), but the art paper on which it is printed is heavy (by my calculations twice as heavy as photocopier paper for e.g.), making the finished item weigh more than it need. It actually weighs 260g, which is high for a book of 144pp.
Despite the weight consideration, I did take the book on my recent visit, but felt little need to refer to it whilst I had a GPS tracker on my phone and the smaller scale map to refer to. It came into its own only when the waymarking was ambiguous, or when my phone lost power.
For the first-time TMB trekker this might be worth 4 stars, but I offer only 3 because it promised what I needed most and fell short.
