"A group of anglers on Sunday reeled in one of the largest blue marlin ever caught off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, after a marathon struggle that did not end with the billfish alongside the 31-foot boat.

Four hours into a fight that sapped the strength of four novice fishermen who had already battled several large tuna, the 814-pound marlin perished.

Tiburon deckhand Salvador “Chava” Flores spent the next two hours reeling the behemoth to the surface. (The anglers had hoped to release the fish alive.)

Their new dilemma was that the marlin, which had struck a trolled ballyhoo and a large green lure late in the afternoon, was nearly 14 feet long and more than 5 feet around.

The Tiburon, run by Pisces Sportfishing, is designed for smaller game and does not have a transom door through which to slide enormous billfish. The marlin was too massive to be tied to the transom outside the cockpit, and the weary anglers and crew were not strong enough to haul the fish over the rail.

Capt. Rosendo Gomez telephoned for assistance, and another 31-foot vessel arrived with four crewmen.

Pisces stated in a news release: “Even with all this manpower of four anglers and four additional crew it was impossible to hoist the monster fish, that had grown in estimation every hour, into the boat.”

Fortunately, a much larger Pisces yacht was nearby and arrived to save the day. The marlin was collected through its transom door and delivered to the weigh station in the Cabo San Lucas Marina."

OP's thoughts:   Another reminder why Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is the greatest novel ever written.   Santiago caught easily as big of Marlin as this one, managed to catch it by himself, and ultimately had a similar debate on his hands about how to show the world his prize.   Unlike the American's in Cabo though, he only had himself and a small boat as the tools by which to carry his prize home.   We all know how that ended for him sadly.   This story has a better ending albeit still very sad due to the Marlin dying mid fight.   That's the risk you always run fighting Billfish especially any length of time.  Same with many other species, as Tuna's hearts are well known for giving out during a huge fight.   Anyways, go read the book if you haven't

Poorly equipped boat. Don’t need a bigger boat, but a better setup.   A transom door and block-and-tackle would have made it much easier to land.

I cant even imagine. I was worn out after fighting 8-9 Mahi on a charter in Cabo once. All of them put together didn't weigh half what that Marlin weighed.

OP's commentary nailed it.

The Old Man and the Sea was absolutely the first thing that came to mind, and before even reading the post I hoped they had to lash the fish onto the side of the boat and bring it in that way.

According to the article it says it died 4 hours into the fight....a deckhand spent another 2 hours reeling it up from the depths.

I have no reason to doubt that story considering the location, and very common occurrence of big game fish dying from cardiac arrest mid fight.

About 6 months ago, a group of folks fishing for Swords of the Atlantic coast of FL. fought what they thought was a massive Sword, but instead it was a big Bluefin, and it died while fighting the anglers.  Took a cpl. hours to reel the dead weight up for them to realize it.   Then they couldn't even keep the fish b/c of fish cops...which I guess I kind of understand since it was out of season.  Still wasted premium meat.

In Cabo they practice catch and release in a fantastic manner.  It only makes sense for them to do so.  They tag a great number of fish as well.   This was just part of the sport in regards to Billfish dying while fighting.

Sharks get a lot of fish that otherwise would be caught and released.....Dolphins actually wait for you to release the damn fish then kill them

Sharks, massive Marlin...in the vein of this thread:

You can read similar stories about Panama in the 50s, and 60s.   Hemingway fished there quite a bit to my understanding as well.

An American Oil tycoon is responsible for the world knowing about Panama's famous Granders or 1000lb + Marlin.

Those Sturgeons get HUGE, I'm open to believe far fetched stories about them.

When fish get that big and are fought for hours it greatly reduces their longevity even if released. Even tuna at over 200# will have a heart attack and sink to the bottom. They have tried all manner of hookless techniques but after fighting for your life for hours it generally takes a death toll, even if they are released in good shape.

Kind of a shame that it died.  Years ago, they used to wipe out the larger marlin of breeding age.

I’m getting ready for a fishing trip down to Cabo and La Paz.  A few years back, I had a 180 lb (est.) striped marlin on for about 90 minutes.  I lost it about 30 ft from the boat.  I’ve never had a fish kick my butt like that one did.  I can’t imagine fighting something as big as the one in the OP.

Cool story.

However The Old Man and the Sea isn't really about a guy catching a huge fish and sharks eating it.  It's a bit deeper than that.  Good book though.

thats what i love about fishing in the ocean. You can be fishing with a shrimp for bait and can catch anything from a 1lb saltwater catfish, to a damn  hammer head shark. can get exciting fast.

If I remember correctly, Mexico doesn’t allow fishermen to keep marlin unless it dies during the fight.
