As per Vastu Shastra, balconies and terraces play a significant role in balancing energies of a house. Balcony in the correct direction can enhance the flow of positive energies whereas if built in the wrong direction, can stop the flow of qi. Terraces and balconies ensure ventilation and sunlight in the house, so their positioning is of utmost importance. Here are vastu guidelines for the two areas.

• Balconies and terraces should be constructed in the north, east or north-east directions. One must avoid a house with a balcony in the south-west or south direction. • Having a water fountain in the north-east side of the terrace can increase positivity in the house. • If the sitting area is to be made on the terrace then south-west side should be used to keep furniture. Always use wooden furniture instead of wrought iron. • East and northern sides of the terrace can be adorned with shrubs and short plants whereas tall and thick plants should be kept in the southern and western side. • The terrace should always be raised from south-west and have a slope towards north-east so that water always flows from south to east or west to north.

• Extension of a flat in the form of balconies in north-east is considered auspicious whereas balconies extending to the flat in south and west are considered negative. • A terrace or balcony in the north attracts wealth, in east attracts health and opportunity, in the west attracts litigation and in the south attracts fire hazards. Hence north-east direction is the best. • Never collect any clutter in the balcony and keep it clean all the time. • A balcony or terrace is a place to relax; it should be full of positive energy. Cool and pastel colours on balcony walls are advised. • Ceiling of the balcony should be lower than the ceiling of the entire house. • Planning to add a swing on the terrace? It should be on the north-west direction and one must sit facing east or north directions. • The shape of the balcony or terrace should always be either square or rectangle. Any other shape is not advisable in vastu.

Vastu principles are based on the logic of architectural science and following them ensures flawless structure along with health, happiness, prosperity and peace.
