- A: AnswerYour internet speed is not affected by the type of router you have. Internet speeds are controlled by your internet service provider and the DOCSIS version your modem has. The AX1800 is a router only. For internet service you still need a modem. You need both, either as two separate components or a combined router/modem. You may be renting a combined router/modem that you have previously purchased or are renting from your internet service provider. If you are also receiving internet phone service from your ISP, you may have to keep renting their compatible router/modem device. If you have internet only service then you may want to get out of monthly equipment rental fees and purchase your own router and modem. I have the Netgear AX1800 WiFi router and the Netgear CM700 (DOCSIS 3.0) modem. Your modem connects to your internet service provider with a coax cable or if DSL with something that looks like a telephone cable. The modem connects to the router with standard Ethernet cable (RJ-45 connectors). If your current router has a connector for coaxial cable then it's a modem/router, not just a router.

- A: AnswerThe Nighthawk does a pretty good job of initial setup. In fact, it may be more effective than any installer might be in certain specific cases. However, there are certain naming conventions and helpful setup options that may need to be changed for safety and performance. In these latter cases, a PC connection to the router would be required to make changes.

- A: AnswerYes. it is compatible and no you don't need to buy a newer modem on account of compatibility with your router. A router doesn't know or care about the modem. only that it is able to exchange internet protocol packets over Ethernet. I assume your cable modem has an ethernet jack. Your cable modem version (DOCSIS 1, 2 or 3) only relates to compatibility with your internet service provider. Your ISP may no longer support DOCSIS 1 but DOCSIS 3 is overkill as in most cases as we all all suckered into paying more than we have to for speeds far greater than we need.

Q: QuestionHow much is it per month?(3 answers)
A: AnswerThe Netgear AX1800 is a router that you purchase on your own. It does not replace the modem or router/modem you are renting from your internet service provider. If you are not using your ISP as your phone company, too you can replace the modem/router you are renting from your ISP. In that case you will have to purchase a modem as well as a router. There are combined modem/router products that you can purchase as a single component. I have always preferred to keep the components separate as the router technology advances more rapidly than the cable modem technology. I have a Netgear AX1800 Wifi router connected to a Netgear CM700 (DOCSIS3.0) modem.Answered by ERICinROSSLYN

Love this!
Love it! Just upgraded from a very old router… like 7 years old… this runs everything in my home very easily and constant 6-800 mbps with my new 1gig internet speed… my old router would only push out about 250-260 mbps on a 500 mb internet sub. Love the nighthawk app and everything that comes with it. Makes everything very simple to connect and keep track of. Would deff recommend

My personal best buy from Best Buy
For the past 2 years I've had the 100 Mbps plan and rented the standard modem from Xfinity at $14/month and my wireless speeds, with 2 devices, were a low of 25 to 40 Mbps, an average of 50 to 60 Mbps, and a high of maybe 105 Mbps on a very good day. I switched my plan to the 200 Mbps, but wireless speeds remained about the same. Very, very frustrating. When my children came over & there were 4 or 5 devices using wireless the speeds were even worse. Buffering was part of life. Silently cursing Xfinity was also an accepted part of life. I kept Xfinity and the 200 Mbps plan, but switched to the Netgear CM500 High Speed Cable Modem and the Netgear AX1800 WiFi 6 Router. Immediately in most of my home the wifi speeds went up 4 times faster, averaging almost 240 Mbps download and around 6.1 Mbps upload. My bedroom speed was still slow & I purchased the Njghthawk X4 WiFi Mesh Extender (set up as Access Point, plugged the Nighthawk X4 into a bedroom wall outlet and ran a CAT6 Ethernet cable [purchased from Best Buy] from my living room router thru my bedroom wall to the X4) and now the WiFi speed in my bedroom is the same as the rest of my home. And we have an average of 6 to 10 devices simultaneously connected to WiFi. The 2 attached pictures show WiFi speed in my living room and my bedroom. I highly recommend these Nighthawk products. They have made using my home's WiFi much, much more enjoyable and eliminated an unnecessary stress in my life. All 3 products can be purchased for a combined total of around $350 (that's a really good value). Do it! Now!

Powerful and stable router
Finally a superb router that works! This router is replacing a Google Nest WiFi router that was very problematic. I figured for my latest router, I should stick with the same brand as my cable modem, which is also Netgear brand, and everything is working perfectly now. My Philips Hue bridge and Solar City gateway, which must be physically connected to the router are flawlessly working, which was not the case with the Google Nest WiFi. Also I have full WiFi anywhere in my home of 1800 square feet, even though all of my internet equipment is installed in the basement. The Nighthawk App, used to setup the Netgear router worked well, and was very user friendly. I did a speed test with that app, and I am getting slightly more than my bit rate from Xfinity! I’m very happy to have a stable, powerful, WiFi router as all of my connected devices now run perfectly!
