Cradle cap

Cradle cap is very common in newborn babies and so to help you understand what it is and what you can do to manage it, we’ve teamed up with the experts at JOHNSON’S® to provide you with lots of tips and advice…

What is cradle cap?

Cradle cap is also known as seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is the name given to yellowish scaly patches that can sometimes appear on a baby’s scalp. Sometimes other areas can be affected too, including; the eyebrows, behind the ears, around the nose, and even the armpits and nappy area.

What are the signs and symptoms of cradle cap?

The typical signs of your baby having cradle cap are:

  • The crusts can appear on other parts of your baby's scalp and body including the eyebrows and nappy area
  • The crusts can flake and make the skin look red
  • Patches of greasy and yellow crusts
  • It is not itchy or painful and doesn't bother your baby

Although cradle cap symptoms are harmless and won’t cause your baby any distress, it can look unsightly. Small areas of the waxy ‘crust’ may dry and flake off, sometimes leaving behind a red inflamed area.

Occasionally a small amount of hair comes away with the flakes, but this isn’t anything to worry about as it will soon grow back. You should never be tempted to scratch or pick at the crust because this could lead to infection.

What causes cradle cap?

The cause of cradle cap isn’t really known, although it could possibly be linked to hormonal changes which affect the oil-producing glands in your baby’s skin.

When does cradle cap occur?

If your baby is going to get cradle cap it most commonly occurs from around four or five weeks through to one year.

How to treat cradle cap

Usually no specific cradle cap treatment is required as it eventually clears up on its own, but there are some things you can do which will help to manage cradle cap and gently remove the scales:

  • Wash your baby’s hair regularly with baby shampoo, and then use a soft brush over the affected area to loosen the flakes
  • Massage a small amount of baby hair & scalp oil to help loosen dry flakes of cradle cap
  • Thick crusts can be softened by using petroleum jelly at night and in resistant cases a medical treatment may help. Always check with your pharmacist if the product is suitable for the age of your baby

If the cradle cap becomes inflamed or infected talk to your health visitor or go to your GP as further treatment may be needed.

When to see a doctor about cradle cap

Please consult a doctor if...

  • The cradle cap is all over your baby's body
  • The crusts are leaking fluid or are bleeding
  • The affected areas appear to be swollen
  • There's no improvement after a few weeks of treatment

How long does cradle cap last?

Many babies have mild cradle cap which usually disappears after a few months, however, for some it can take up to 6-9 months to clear.
