New team signs Fabian Cancellara

LUXEMBOURG -- Time-trial world champion Fabian Cancellara has joined Tour de France runner-up Andy Schleck on the new Luxembourg pro cycling team.

The Swiss rider signed a three-year contract Tuesday. Team general manager Brian Nygaard described the pairing of Cancellara and Schleck as "one of the best teams in the sport."

"We have added one of the most significant athletes and personalities in professional cycling," Nygaard said.

Cancellara said he had received several offers.

"In the end I knew that the project in Luxembourg would have all the ingredients I would need to continue improving myself without skipping a beat," he said in a statement.

Cancellara was the last addition to the Luxembourg-based team, which is expected to unveil its name at an official launch Jan. 6.

He came from Bjarne Riis' Saxo Bank team. Earlier this year, Luxembourg brothers Andy and Frank Schleck left Riis for the new team and were followed by teammates Jakob Fuglsang, Jens Voigt and Stuart O'Grady.

The team was created by Nygaard, Riis' former longtime media assistant.

Nygaard said he was aiming to win the Tour de France.

"I'm happy that the team is perfectly placed to make its mark in the Grand Tours and most importantly find the top step," he said. "To be a part of a Tour-winning team is one of the most beautiful accomplishments any pro cyclist can hope for."
