Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was an American artist known for her large-scale paintings of flowers, rocks, shells, animal bones, and other natural forms. Her work is considered a major contribution to American modernism, and she is often considered the "Mother of American modernism." She was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. She began her career as a commercial artist, but by the 1920s, she had developed her own unique style of painting.
