Pro cycling transfers – Every move for the 2024 season

Now in December, the transfer season is coming towards its close, with most deals and moves already signed, sealed and announced, four months after the transfer window officially opened.

August 1 was the key date in the diary, as cycling's transfer 'window' swung open. In reality, this is merely a PR window, with many a deal already having been struck during the Tour de France and even as early as the Spring.

August is when the floodgates opened, but deals have continued to be made and have trickled out all through the autumn and winter, with some more complicated moves - such as Primož Roglič's switch to Bora-Hansgrohe - taking more time, whilst others head into December still without a contract.

Below you'll find a list of all the confirmed transfers so far, and we'll continue to update with all of the latest moves, so check back to find up-to-date information on how the peloton is shaping up for 2024.

2024's biggest moves

The two biggest stories to come out of this year's transfer window both come from the men's peloton: Primož Roglič's departure from Jumbo-Visma to Bora-Hansgrohe, and Mark Cavendish's decision to postpone his retirement.

Both decisions were made with the Tour de France in mind, and therefore we might not see until July if they've paid off. Roglič leaves Jonas Vingegaard and Sepp Kuss at Jumbo-Visma in search of more freedom and leadership opportunities so he can tick off the one Grand Tour that evades him, whilst Cavendish is hoping to surpass the stage wins record after his unfortunate abandon from this year's race.

Ineos Grenadiers have also been at the centre of much transfer talk, since they were slow off the mark to announce any new additions. They're losing a few big names, with Luke Plapp breaking his contract early to go to Jayco-AlUla, whilst Tao Geoghegan Hart is seeking his next steps at Lidl-Trek. Their incomings include Tobias Foss and young talent AJ August, but will that be enough?

On the women's side, the new EF Education-Cannondale team have been making a lot of waves, with the arrivals of Kristen Faulkner and Veronica Ewers their biggest catches, as well as securing Coryn Labecki who moves on from Jumbo-Visma. There's more big news for American racing, too, as Ruth Edwards has announced her return from retirement, and a new contract with Human Powered Health.

Even now, into December, when most moves are inked, there are still rumours around certain riders' futures, with Cian Uijtdebroeks linked to a move away from Bora-Hansgrohe, and the 2025 WorldTour home of impressive junior Albert Philipsen likely to be confirmed before 2024 even begins.

Transfer market overview

Unlike soccer, pro cycling contracts are usually seen through, and no transfer fees change hands. However, sometimes deals can be cut short by mutual consent, and this summer has seen a fair bit of upheaval.

It didn't seem that way at the start of the summer. On August 1, the sport's very biggest stars were all under contract for 2024, and even beyond – Tadej Pogačar and Juan Ayuso at UAE Team Emirates through 2027, and 2028, Wout van Aert and Primož Roglič at Jumbo-Visma through 2026 and 2025, Remco Evenepoel at Soudal Quick-Step through 2026, Mathieu van der Poel at Alpecin-Deceuninck through 2025, and Tom Pidcock at Ineos Grenadiers through 2026.

On the women's side, the Tour de France Femmes champion Demi Vollering is signed up to SD Worx through 2024, as are Lotte Kopecky and Lorena Wiebes, while Lidl-Trek have already locked down Elisa Balsamo and Elisa Longo Borghini, and 36-year-old Marianne Vos has another two years left at Jumbo-Visma.

Almost all of them are sticking to those plans, but Roglič has made a sensational switch to Bora-Hansgrohe following internal tensions at the Vuelta a España. The Slovenian made his mind up before plans for a merger between Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step emerged, but that only underlined the fragility of the pro cycling contract. Speculation had already been rife for a number of months concerning a possible transfer for Evenepoel, and suddenly he found himself as a potential Jumbo-Visma rider, while many of his teammates were threatened with unemployment.

With the merger hastily scrapped, things do look pretty stable in terms of team continuity, with WorldTour licences assured through 2025. However, some teams will already be starting to fret over ranking points, with dsm-firmenich, Arkéa-Samsic, and Astana Qazaqstan currently languishing near the bottom of the rankings. Meanwhile, there is pressure already being applied by second-division teams with Tudor Pro Cycling and Uno-X notably making statements of intent in the market.

On the women's side, the dominant force in recent years and one of the most successful riders of all time, Van Vleuten, will leave a hole in the peloton, and there were no real big-name replacements available on the markey. There is relative stability and even some progression as women's cycling prepares for a three-tier teams structure in 2025, but there is upheaval in the creation of the new EF team, co-sponsored by Cannondale and the closure of their predecessor, EF Education-TIBCO-SVB.
