Rembrandt
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669) was one of the greatest draftsmen of all time. Even small and quick sketches by the Dutch master reveal his incomparable skill in capturing compositions, figures and groups, human gestures and facial expressions, and landscapes with a few strokes. Although some of Rembrandt’s drawings served as preparatory studies for paintings and etchings, most are conceptual works in which he investigated motifs of movement and expression, and recorded ideas for his own works and those produced by pupils in his studio.In terms of quantity and quality, the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett has one of the best collections of Rembrandt drawings in the world. Encompassing works from his entire career, this exquisite monograph presents the full spectrum of the genres and materials used in the drawings. Recent scholarship has revealed that many drawings once attributed to Rembrandt were in fact done by his pupils. Of the 126 drawings in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett formerly attributed to Rembrandt, only fifty-five are still considered original works by the master.This richly illustrated publication, an abridged edition of the critical catalogue of Rembrandt’s drawings in Berlin by Holm Bevers, focuses on attribution, contrasting Rembrandt’s drawings with a selection of twenty-five works by his pupils, as well as providing answers to questions regarding the function, iconography, and style of the drawings.
