What Makes the Windows 8 Logo So Unique?

When a company redesigns it brand logo, it tries to project a new corporate identity through the design. However, redesigning a brand emblem is always risky and only some companies retain the same popularity after changing its insignia. Last month, Microsoft launched Windows 8 operating system and changed the Windows logo radically.

 Windows 8 Logo

Famous graphic design company “Pentagram” was hired for the job and they created yet another branding masterpiece. The reputed firm worked for companies like Nissan, Citi and Time magazine before and this time they created a logo that conveys the essence of this new and advanced OS.

The insignia showcases 4 pale blue tiles and looks like a window. It is a classic amalgamation of past and present of Microsoft. The very first Windows logo had four panes and the UI of the new OS also has a tile style design. The emblem may seem unimpressive to untrained eyes due to the pale blue color, but when you change the system color, the emblem changes its color too. This unique customization feature will bring people closer to the new operating system.

The software giant wanted an authentic, modern and humble design and there is no doubt that the insignia has all the three qualities. It’s well balanced, looks bold and represents the Metro user interface quite successfully. To mirror the Metro style design, Pentagram used International Typographic Style and gave the insignia an authentically digital look.
