It's December 2012. Your eyes are glued to your television screen as you wait in anticipation to find out once and for all the true identity of Gossip Girl.

Yes, the face behind the salacious blog is about to be revealed - could it be Blair's housekeeper, Dorota? Or maybe it was Little J all along.

If you thought either of those were the mastermind behind the one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite, you were sorely mistaken.

That's because Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) ended up unmasking himself as the one who had repeatedly spilt all of his nearest and dearest's secrets on the internet over six seasons of drama.

Unbelievable, right?!

Well, that could be because he wasn't initially meant to be Gossip Girl.

Joshua Safran, who was a writer on the original programme and is now serving as the showrunner of the reboot, has confessed they originally had a different character in mind for GG.

By the end of the fourth season and throughout the fifth, he claims they planned for Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) to be the anonymous blogger and if you look closely, there are some clues.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, Safran said: "It was Nate. It was Nate until the day I left. I think we all came to the conclusion that it might be Nate by the end of season four and then we spent season five teeing it up.

"If you watch it, there are many clues to it being Nate. But I also think weirdly, in noir fashion, it’s great that we dropped a red herring. But it wasn’t as organic as Dan.

"I wanted it to be Nate, and it actually makes much more sense when it’s Nate – even when it doesn’t make sense. I mean, it would have been great to never reveal it."

He continued to say: "I think there would have been holes in anybody being Gossip Girl and it wasn’t Dan when I left the show [after Season 5], but I also understand why it is Dan.

"Yes, I agree there are things that don’t line up, but it had to be Dan.

He added: "With Dan, it makes sense because he wanted to find a way in; but with Nate, it was because he’d never sent anything in to Gossip Girl and if it had been Nate, it was based on this idea that he’d felt so guilty for sleeping with [Serena van der Woodsen, played by Blake Lively] that he had to create an alter ego to bring us all to it."

Gossip Girl ran from 2007 to 2012 and starred Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Ed Westwick, Penn Badgley and Chace Crawford.

The new reboot features a range of different characters attending private school in New York but the iconic Gossip Girl figure is back and fans will be able to see how social media has changed the way she operates.
