The Statue Imperia of Konstanz

On the small house for water-level observations, which is located in the entrance to the harbor in Konstanz, stands a nine-meter-high and 18-ton-heavy sculpture that Peter Lenk from Berlin named Imperia. The statue turns on an axis that runs perpendicular to the roof of the small house. This image of feminine beauty decorates the bay of Konstanz and the adjacent harbor, and it marks the city of Konstanz. It represents a prostitute from an earlier age. The arms of the figure are stretched out, and the hands carry two animated figures, who represent the emperor and the Pope. These small figures carry the corresponding symbols for worldly and religious power, the emperor's crown and the Pope's tiara. Likewise the emperor spreads his legs, whereas the Pope crosses them.

The statue is over 9 meters tall and located at the harbor of Konstanz. The object we scanned is not the real Imperia but a much smaller cement statue, standing in the garden of the artist. It was possible to remove the two little figures of the pope and the emperor to scan them separately.

The scanning process of the Imperia was documented by Marcel Nause and Felicia Burkhard, as it was part of their Bachelor Thesis.

All images used to generate the texture of the imperia are available as calibrated image set. The camera information for every registered image was saved to a text file.
