Bogdan Borčić: Painting And Space

Apr 04, 2024 - Jun 09, 2024

The collection of works by Bogdan Borčić in the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška (KGLU) began to take shape in the final years of the last century. In 2003, it was significantly enhanced by the artist’s donation of 40 paintings, to which he added another 10 in 2006. Following the artist’s death, his family donated parts of his artistic legacy to the KGLU. The collection of Bogdan Borčić’s works in KGLU has thus grown to 330 works, including 314 paintings, 11 graphics, and 5 sculptures.

In this setup of Bogdan Borčić’s collection, entitled PAINTING AND SPACE (Interwoven Sequences), we highlighted two motifs to which the artist continually returned – the motifs of “door” and studio”. More than 50 of Borčić’s paintings, graphics, and sculptures will be on display. Alongside works from the last 20 years of the artist’s life, some of his older works will also be exhibited, which will help shed light on the development of the two emphasized motifs.

Aside the formal differences between the works of various authors, their common pursuit is especially visible, proving that the artist is not self-sufficient but is, on the contrary, connected and involved in the scene, with thoughts and feelings. These works inspired Borčić or vice versa, and now resonate in this setup. In dialogue with the works of other authors, the large abstract paintings of Bogdan Borčić come to life in a new way. The exhibition also includes two interventions – a sculpture by Jure Markota and wall paintings by Dean Jokanović Toumin.

Such an arrangement allows us to explore the artist’s method of working and understand how the motif developed and constantly changed. By placing Borčić’s work in a new context, we enabled visitors a new perspective on his works.
