Tributes Pour in for Pilar Bardem, Mother of Javier Bardem, as She Dies Aged 82

Tributes have been pouring in for Pilar Bardem, the Spanish actress and mother of screen star Javier Bardem, after she passed away at the age of 82.

Pilar, also the mother of actors Carlos and Monica Bardem, passed away on Saturday at Madrid's Ruber Hospital due to complications from lung disease not related to COVID, according to Deadline.

"We want to share the news that Pilar Bardem, our mother, our example, has died," Carlos wrote on Twitter in Spanish on Saturday. "She departed in peace and without suffering, surrounded by the love of her family.

"We know the love and admiration many felt for her, both in Spain and beyond, for her work as an actress and as a fighter who always stood in solidarity. We truly appreciate that love for our mother with all our hearts. Thank you from her children, Carlos, Monica, and Javier."

On Sunday, Carlos returned to social media to share a snapshot of himself and his two siblings posing with photographic memories of their mother.

"We bid farewell to my mom with a heart full of love. With tenderness and a smile," Carlos wrote in his tribute. "And with our soul overflowing with gratitude for the thousands and thousands of messages of affection, respect, and admiration for Pilar Bardem. Thank you for this wave of love."

Pilar Bardem's daughter-in-law Penélope Cruz, who has been married to Javier Bardem since 2010, shared an image of herself with the late actress in their 2001 movie Live Flesh, Don't Tempt Me—one of four films they co-starred in—as she shared her own tribute on Instagram on Sunday.

"My dearest Pilar, I look at this photo and wonder what our reaction would've been if someone would've told at this moment all the marvelous plans destiny had in store for us beyond the big screen," she wrote in in her native Spanish.

"You were always so good to me," she continued. "I couldn't have dreamed of having a better mother-in-law. Thank you for all the love that you've given us, your children, grandchildren, family, and friends. You have given me so much. Thank you for always standing by those who needed it the most and for raising your voice against injustice."

Cruz went on to commend Pilar Bardem for "fighting to improve the living conditions of the most needy members of our sector, without ever expecting anything in return. It cannot be forgotten that in our profession many things have improved thanks to your great effort over the years, without giving up at any time.

"You're admirable. Thank you for sharing with me all these years your wisdom and your humor! I love you a lot. I will always carry you in my heart. Thanks Pilar."

Cruz's actress and dancer sister, Mónica Cruz, posted a black-and-white photo of the late star on Instagram as she shared her own memories.

"I will always remember you with a smile and I will always feel very lucky to have been part of your life," she wrote. "Thank you for everything you leave us, for your care and for your tireless fight....

"We have our birthday the same day and since life together we always celebrated it together and it will continue to be the case, I will continue to blow the candles for both of us because even though you have left I am sure that we will feel very close and you will continue to take care of everyone, how you always did. We are going to miss you a lot, Pilar."

Also paying tribute was Spanish-born actor Antonio Banderas, who wrote on Instagram: "Pilar Bardem has left us. The stages and movie theaters in Spain have lost a revered actress. My heart is with her family during this difficult time. A strong hug for Carlos, Monica, and Javier."

Meanwhile, actress Yassmine Othman said of the beloved star on Twitter: "Actress, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, partner, defender of actors' rights founding and presiding #aisge, great defender and fighter for human rights, independent woman and what a great woman."

She continued: "You do not leave us just one legacy but many, you will be missed and will always be in our hearts. See you on the other side Pilar. My condolences to the entire Bardem family, friends, colleagues and fans."

Actress and activist Pilar Bardem enjoyed a successful decades-long career in film, TV and theater in Spain. She received noted acclaim for the 1995 project Nadie hablará de nosotras cuando hayamos muerto (Nobody Will Speak of Us When We're Dead), which earned 8 Goya Awards, the country's highest film honors.
