San Quintin’s people, fishing and cuisine never disappoint
Staying at the Old Mill Hotel, former WON editor Pat McDonell and IGFA rep. Chris Wheaton filled the cooler with fillets, whacked 15-pound class yellows (8) the first day Tuesday in high spots on yo-yo’d iron and then went after rockfish and lings the rest of the day and Wednesday.

L.A. BAY’S YELLOWTAIL cooperated on a family outing for Capt. Juan Cook. He is now operating for the rest of the summer out of San Quintin Bay.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS saw increased numbers of dorado showing up, though the majority were smaller sized fish, but again a couple of much larger bulls over 50 pounds were reported from a cruiser fishing near Cabrillo Seamount, but also scattered throughout the region, striking on a variety of trolled feathers and rigging baits.

ROY THUN OF Valencia and his son Garrett had an ideal fishing trip to the East Cape where on the second day on the water they scored some huge roosters, going four for six on the pez gallos, 40 to 80 pounds.

IT’S SUMMERTIME, BUT big mullet snapper (pargo liso) have been showing up and spawning in the shallows near Cerralvo Island and just outside of Bahia Muertos and Las Arenas. Mark Buchanan and Diana Hernandez from San Diego hooked into several of these over the reef.

CELEBRATING HIS BACHELOR party, long-time Tailhunter Sportfishing angler Leif Dover from Atlanta brought his buddy, Brian O’Neil with him. Their first day fishing out of Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay they loaded up early on dorado then went chasing pargo and snapper in the shallows.

THE PISCES FLEET’S 28-foot Andrea released3 striped marlin beginning the week, between Golden Gate and Migrino on mackerel bait and also landed a 30-pound yellowtail on mackerel for John Craegn and Mike Hoback from Seattle.

CATCHING THE 814-POUND blue marlin was the group of California anglers who fished aboard the 31-foot Tiburon, a Pisces Fleet sportfisher. The battle lasted six hours. Anglers were Dennis Poudel, Mark Molnar, Sam Ferrans and Curtis Paul.

THE HUGE MARLIN could not be brought into the 31-foot BertramTiburon which does not have a transom door, so crews of the La Brisa and Reels ‘N Dirt helped secure the blue marlin for the ride home.

ROGER THOMPSON FORMERLY from Long Beach has a house at La Ventana near La Paz and was slow trolling a sardine in about 20 feet of water when this hog yellowtail hit. He got 3 to the boat and lost a freight train he couldn’t stop on a Salas jig.

DEBBIE WALDEN FROM Lakewood was out visiting her sister Donna Thompson, right, this past week near La Paz. Donna has lots of experience on big Baja fish and they were out at the north end of Cerralvo Island when they hit breaking yellowtail. This guy hit and both ladies had fun tag-teaming it to get it to the boat.

OUTPOST CHARTERS OUT of Puerto Escondido fished Saturday at El Seco, a pinnacle off Catalan Island, and scored yellows 22 to 35 pounds on live mackerel at 120 feet in rough conditions.

DOUG OCLASSEN HAS been fishing with the Tailhunter Fleet for years and comes every year. He picked up two huge wahoo one-after-the-other including this beast while fishing with Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter Fleet just outside of Bahia de los Muertos.

KURT GALLOW GOT a beast of a dogtooth snapper in shallow waters on a live mackerel just off the rocks near Punta Perrico by Muertos Bay. He was fishing with Captain Armando of the Tailhunter Fleet and Kurt’s wife, Brenda. They’re from Castle Rock WA.

RICK SKAARAR IS a cattle rancher rom Arizona on his first trip to La Paz and landed several nice wahoo including this one with Captain Gerardo of the Tailhunter Fleet. He also picked up some nice dorado fishing near Punta Arenas.

BAY OF L.A. turned out some nice fish for Doug Coffey who returned from a three-day trip, and among the better catches were a pargo by Steve Bergdahl, yellowtail by Greg Sprague, Steve Bergdal and Bruce Micheel, and a 16-pound cabrilla.

HUNTINGTON BEACH ANGLER Mark Garrity was fishing for the first time in La Paz and got one of the larger dorado of the early season with this bull caught on live bait north of the city near Espirito Santo Island with Tailhunter Sportfishing.
