Erect, sometimes branched stem from rosette of leaves. Basal leaves bright green, lance-shaped, to 10 in. long, toothed, with rounded tips, on short petioles; few small stem leaves sessile. Long spike of stalked flowers atop stems. Flowers yellow or white, flat, about 1 in. across, stamen filaments densely coated with purple hairs. Grows in fields, along roads, disturbed places, at low and mid elevations.
