An attractive, robust small to medium sized conifer with a dense crown of needle-like leaves and cones with large, edible seeds. Pinus cembra is a typical tree of high elevations between 1300 and 2900 m in the Alps the High Tatras and the Carpathians. It makes a desirable and very cold hardy ornamental for temperate climates. Its very aromatic wood is reddish and popular for typical alpine-style furniture.
