      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Grim and graphic, Too Old to Die Young is stylish, but its languid story does little to justify its violent tendencies-- though fans of Refn's may find enjoyment in its neon laden misery.

Rebecca Harrison Sight & Sound An aesthetic so nonchalant that every murder and rape feels like a casual shrug; a deadpan performance from Teller that would easily win a children's game of musical statues. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Nicholas Barber BBC.com The series is addictive, in an unpleasant sort of way. Rated: 3/5 Jul 5, 2019 Full Review Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Refn made his name with tense and gruesome crime films in his native Denmark; here he gets to luxuriate at length. Jun 27, 2019 Full Review Mike Thorn Vague Visages Refn's cinematic vision in Too Old to Die Young is a complex piece of post-postmodernity, grim and hilarious and sexy, and in many ways irresolvable. Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Victoria Alexander FilmsInReview.com Cruelty as an art. An original masterpiece with a vision all Refn’s own. Bravo to the powers that recognize his brilliance. I’m calling for Refn directing a John Wick film. Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene Perhaps when I've been through all 15 or so hours of the series I'll conclude it adds up to very little. But I've gotta admit, I want to see where it takes me. Joe W This could have been an interesting story, but it's to sloooow! There's way to much staring ahead. Staring at each other. Even sleeping on camera. Unbelievable. I made it to episode 2 and finally started using my remote's "jump forward" button. Ten seconds at a time. I did it three times and still saw the character just staring. Don't waste your time. Someone, please edit this thing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Audience Member This show started off pretty good. The first 2-3 episodes I would have given this a 5 star review but it only went downhill from there. It started off with a lot more “action” if you will but eventually the episodes were 90% pointless scenes and the acting got so bad it felt more like a cheap porno… In fact just because of episode 6 alone I’m leaving this at 3 stars. That episode actually made the show worse it was so bad, it was like watching the cast from the jersey shore try and act out one of those cheesy hallmark romance shows, but AN HOUR AND A HALF LONG. I haven’t made it past episode 6 I’m so irritated, but I’m begging you if you start watching this show just completely skip that episode. As some other reviews have said this 10 episode series should have been just a long movie at most. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Marcos L La serie lenta pero muy buena. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Jason R I had to make myself sit through the first episode; pretty sure I'll never know what happens in the second episode. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/23 Full Review Dave K This series had an interesting plot and characters but moved insanely slow. Could have been a 5 star show w/o all the long pauses in dialog and moving the story forward. No wonder why it didn't get a 2nd season. Sometimes the artsy fartsy people can't get out of their own way. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/16/23 Full Review Ravenswood R Liked this a lot. You have to enjoy a long slow exposition, which I am finding out more and more I do have the patience for. It is long, but it is a singular experience. It is neither incredibly original or unique in terms of characters or story, but the way it is told can make all the difference. Extreme violence, multiple oddities, and well handled moments of humor. Towards the end it follows unexpected paths, but it was all hinted at earlier. An intelligently crafted series. I would definitely watch a season 2 of this, but it will never be. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
