Description
The human skeleton is the internal framework of the human body. It is composed of around 270 bones at birth – this total decreases to around 206 bones by adulthood after some bones get fused together. The bone mass in the human skeleton reaches maximum density around the age of 21. Every single person has a skeleton made up of many bones. These bones give your body structure, let you move in many ways, protect your internal organs, and more. The skeletal system is composed of four main fibrous and mineralised connective tissues: bones, ligaments, tendons, and joints. The bony skeleton is divided into 2 parts: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton is the central core unit, consisting of the skull, vertebrae, ribs, and sternum. The appendicular skeleton comprises the bones of the extremities. The skeletal system works as a support structure for your body. It gives the body its shape, allows movement, makes blood cells, provides protection for organs and stores minerals. The skeletal system is also called the musculoskeletal system. In this lesson, students will identify important parts of the human skeleton and explain how the skeleton protects body parts. Additionally, learners will describe how the skeleton supports the body and allows it to move.
