I would imagine they are quite fragile. A small group in a species only tank.
And prob need a constant supply of live food - daphnia etc.

Brine shrimp hatcheries are your friend here, as far as i know they only eat live foods.

I've got a few live cultures going
    - bbs
    - daphnia
    - Walter worms
    - vinegar eels (new)
    - shrimp
They have so far eaten everything that I gave them.
I've tried small food that look like worms, vibra bites for betta, I've tried fine food. I've tried lots of dry goods, they're just NOT INTERESTED.
I've tried frozen bloodworms, NOT INTERESTED

    They only eat live foods!!!

How big can they open their mouthes? Neocaridina shrimps could be another option, albeit an expensive one. Unless you have unlimited supply. Guppy fry is another option.

@Little Nicky - I have tested both shrimp and guppy fry and they eat both. Even the amanos didnt come out of their caves. So I assume they'll also be eaten - but haven't witnessed the pipefish eating amanos. I have removed the amanos, because they cant stay in hiding all day and not eat.

@Nadia Karsten Might be worthwhile (if you can) to grow shrimp in a pond. They survive the winter here in Jhb, dont know about Upington winters though.
