Luxury BMW vehicles are known worldwide for their reliability and excellent design but every now and then famous German manufacturer unveils a car that's meant for true auto and art fanatics only. This year the company decided to add two more sculptures to its famous BMW art car collection and invited artists from different art genres and opposite parts of the globe to design the new "rolling masterpieces". Chinese artist Cao Fei and American artist John Baldessari will be joining the ranks of outstanding figures such as Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons whose designs already grace garages and race tracks around the globe. Two artists revealed their concepts during Art Basel, but the audience and the media were worn that they might change significantly in the future since the designs are far from finished.

John Baldessari's Doted Pop Art Car

Pop artist John Baldessari is the one who went further with his design and even created a small-scale model of the future BMW art car. The pop artist has envisioned a colorful car with the balded words FAST written on both sides of the automobile. His unique BMW M6 GT3 will be embellished with the artist's recognizable green and red dots that will be carefully placed on the front side of the car. The back will be colored in blue while yellow will be incorporated to both front and back part of the shell. During the revealing of the concept at Art Basel the artist stated that he felt as if he simply had to include the dots since they are a part of his "iconic series" and added that : "the challenge comes in making something that cannot be understood from just one point of view, but only from a total point of view".

Futuristic BMW by Cao Fei

Cao Fei has employed a different, more thorough approach. Celebrated contemporary artist from China conducted detailed research and visited BMW factory in Shenyang where she was acquainted with the cars and the manufacturing process. It seems that we should expect a more futuristic design from the talented artist who decided on autonomous cars and virtual reality as main themes of her BMW art car sculpture. "I expect to transcend the current context of cars and to embrace new possible ways of expressions" - the artist stated about her BMW design.

Fascinating collection of BMW Art Cars

Now widely popular concept of creating art automobiles originally came from race-car driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain and in 1975 the first BMW art car was created. The company's extraordinary collection of art cars currently comprises of 17 vehicles, all transformed by leading artists from around the world. The 18th BMW art car that will be created by Cao Fei is designated for the Asian market and it will make its debut at a museum in summer of 2017 before it hits the race tracks all over this vast continent. John Baldessari's colorful art piece, on the other hand, will be unveiled this year on November 30, at Art Basel in Miami Beach. This will be the second pop art car created this year considering that Sir Peter Blake recently designed a one-of-a-kind Bentley so it will be interesting to compare the two pop art automobiles. One lucky driver of the Rolex 24 race at Daytona, will have the honor to be the first to drive this pop art BMW at an event scheduled for January 2017.
