International cyclocross bicycle racing returns to Deerfield Township Kingswood Park this weekend
Cyclocross racers from around the country and the world will once again converge on Deerfield Township's Kingswood Park for internationally-sanctioned cyclocross racing on Saturday and Sunday.Hundreds of racers are registered for the two-day event, featuring amateur and professional fields."Our Kings CX event is one of only 7 UCI C1 -- or elite, professional level -- races in the country, and this year is drawing an amazing lineup of professional cyclocross racers," said Kings CX Race Director Katie Farmer of Morrow."We are so excited to partner with Deerfield Township and our sponsors to bring this exciting cyclocross event to showcase our region, cycling community and exceptional athletes. As our race takes place in October, riders know to be prepared for any conditions over the two days, as the weather can be unpredictable, and the course can change from one day to the next. It may be fast and flowy or absolutely muddy."Cyclocross racing is best compared to steeplechase. The courses are short, generally less than two miles, and based on time, not distance. Races feature a variety of terrain, including pavement, gravel, mud, sand and, occasionally, snow and ice.Courses often include obstacles, such as barriers or stairs, which force racers to dismount and shoulder their bikes while running. Cyclocross season spans the fall and winter months, generally running from September to January, culminating in the Cyclocross World Championships in late January or early February.Kings CX will also feature food trucks, a beer garden, music, professional announcers, vendors and children's activities.
