Lauren Ames: From hoops standout to professional marathon runner
WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - One of my favorite high school athletes of all time was a player on the South Jefferson basketball team back in the early to mid-2000s.
Little did I know this athlete would run a 2-hour, 45-minute Boston Marathon two weeks ago, finishing 198th out of 26,482 runners. But then again, it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise.
The former Lauren Sischo, now Lauren Ames, was a standout athlete at South Jefferson and St. Lawrence, winning a state title on the basketball team in 2004.
Back then she developed a love for running, which she carries to this day.
Ames ran her first Boston Marathon in 2011. She realized that she had a talent for long-distance running from earlier marathons in places like Lake Placid and Maine.
She ran this past Boston Marathon under the USA Pro running banner, part of an elite group of runners.
Next up, we’ll talk to Lauren Ames about her past Boston Marathon performance.
