Male Callochromis pleurospilus from Lake Tanganyika.
A favourite species of mine, which I kept and bred years ago. Many African mouthbrooders have yellow or orange spots on the male's anal fin that act as 'egg dummies' which the female mouths as she picks up the eggs to incubate them; this stimulates the male to release sperm to fertilise the eggs in her mouth. Ad Konings pointed out that this species is unique because the pale pink edge of the male's anal fin is the same colour as the eggs and during spawning this fin is curved so the pink edge becomes an 'egg dummy'. One of my first successes in aquarium photography was when I was lucky enough to get an image of this behaviour.
