Description

COLD WAX DEPILATORY COMPOSITION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a depilatory composition for the removal of hair from the surface of the skin. In addition, a method of producing the present composition, and preferred methods of use are also described. The depilatory composition of the present invention is comprised of natural ingredients which produce a pliable, wax-like cold depilatory composition that firmly and efficiently adheres to and removes hair from the skin surface.
The composition of the present invention effectively adheres to both coarse and fme hair, and subsequent to an application results in a treated area substantially free of hair. In addition, the present depilatory enmeshes or adheres to the hair at the skin surface, without adhering to the skin surface itself, and therefore, does not cause any damage or irritation to the skin.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The removal of hair from the surface of the skin, whether for cosmetic, aesthetic, or hygienic reasons, is the basis of an industry that encompasses a wide range of products, instruments, and techniques which attempt or intend to remove hair and hair follicles from the surface of skin. In the formulation of a depilatory composition, it is highly desirable that the composition be comprised of natural ingredients that can easily be applied to the skin, either to a localized or to a large area, such that the composition effectively adheres to hair thereon, whereby the hair is efficiently removed from the treated area. It is also desirable that the treated area be substantially free of hair with a single application and that the frequency of repeating the treatment is reduced. Furthermore, it is exceedingly desirable that the depilatory composition should not cause damage or irritation to the skin.
DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART
The prior art describes various depilatory compositions which claim to remove hair from the surface of skin. For instance, United States Patent No. 5,698,187 issued to S. Naggiar on December 16,1997 describes a depilatory composition comprised of maltodextrin, sucrose, citric acid and water which claims to remove hair from the skin surface. United States Patent No.
4,842,610 issued to H. Gordon et al on June 27, 1989 describes a depilatory composition of corn syrup, water, and additional chemical additives, such as germicides and preservatives. Both the Naggiar and Gordon patents describe depilatory compositions that adhere to both hair at the skin surface and to the skin surface itself, thereby resulting in an inefficient removal of hair from the treated skin surface and a substantial amount of irritation to the skin.
United States Patent No. 4,832,949 issued to C. Royal on May 23, 1989, describes a depilatory composition comprised of honey, sugar and citric acid, which must be heated before use. Canadian Patent No. 1,161,366 issued to C. Nassopoulos on January 31, 1984 describes a depilatory composition comprised of sugar, citrus fruit and sodium chloride, and British Patent No.1,242,083 issued to M. Doughty describes a composition comprised of sugar, citric acid and water and optional additions of gelatin or isinglass.
There are many patents in the prior art that propose various depilatory compositions that allegedly remove hair from the surface of skin. Although some of the prior art compositions consist of a base mixture of a sugar and an acid, there is nothing in the prior art that describes a depilatory formulation comprised of the ingredients of the presently disclosed composition.
Furthermore, the present invention comprises not only a novel depilatory composition, it also constitutes an improved composition that adheres specifically to hair, and efficiently removes hair from the skin surface without causing any irritation to the skin itself.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a composition comprised of natural ingredients, that when combined in specific amounts according to a specific protocol result in the pliable, wax-like depilatory composition of the present invention. It is also an object of the invention to provide a depilatory which is malleable at room temperature, and does not require heating before use, and which can be applied over selected areas of the skin to effect a complete removal of hair therefrom.
Accordingly, the present invention relates to a cold depilatory composition, and to a method of producing the disclosed composition. The depilatory composition of the present invention is comprised essentially of sugar, corn syrup, corn starch, citric acid and water or equivalent ingredients, which yield a cold depilatory composition that effectively and efficiently adheres to and removes hair from the skin surface without adhering to the skin surface itself, thereby avoiding any damage or irritation to the skin.
The present invention provides a novel and improved depilatory composition which can be applied to specific areas of the body for the purpose of completely and efficiently removing hair and hair follicles from a treated area of skin without causing any irritation or damage to the
-2-skin. The present invention can be used to remove hair from all areas of the body, for example, legs, arms and face, or from any other area of the body. In addition, the present depilatory composition can be used by both men and women, and therefore is not limited to an individual consumer base.
The depilatory composition of the present invention is comprised of all natural ingredients that are readily available, and the composition is completely water soluble, non-greasy, odourless and biodegradable. Furthermore, the present invention is completely non-toxic, and can even be ingested safely. In addition to being an environmentally-friendly product, in both its composition and method of production, the development of the depilatory composition of the present invention does not entail any animal testing and is therefore also a consumer-friendly product.
In addition to being formed entirely of natural ingredients, the depilatory composition of the present invention is comprised of relatively few ingredients, all of which are commonly available and relatively inexpensive. Therefore, the production of the composition in large quantities is exceptionally cost-effective. Furthermore, the production of the present depilatory composition is uncomplicated, and economical. In addition to possessing a highly cost effective manufacturing process, the depilatory composition also enjoys an exceptionally long shelf life.
The depilatory of the present invention can be produced as a wax-like composition that is packaged aseptically into jars, from which the required amount can be removed with a spoon, or with a spatula, or by any other means, and then applied to the selected area of skin.
Alternatively, to further prolong the life of the composition after initial use, specific amounts of the composition considered adequate for an individual application may be aseptically sealed into individual application packets, thereby reducing any potential contaminations that may develop due to repeated use of the product from a single source or supply. In another embodiment, the depilatory composition can be embedded in or adhered to one side of a strip of fabric, which is then applied to the area selected for treatment. Whether the depilatory composition of the present invention is manufactured and packaged into jars, or whether it is dispensed into individual sealed portions, or whether it is adhered to a strip of fabric, or whether it is displayed in any other manner, the present invention is exceptionally effective at removing hair at its roots.
-3-The depilatory composition of the present invention is an improved composition since it adheres effectively and efficiently to hair at the skin surface and not to the skin surface itself.
Therefore, shortly after the composition has been applied to the selected area in the manner described above, it can then be quickly stripped or pulled away from the skin by hand or by any other means. Preferably, the depilatory composition is removed, or pulled away, from the skin surface using a strip of fabric or paper, whereby the fabric or paper facilitates the removal of the applied composition from the skin surface. For example, once the composition has been thinly spread onto the selected skin surface, a strip of fabric is then placed, or pressed thereon, then while one hand holds the skin taut, the other hand can pull the piece of fabric with the adhered composition away from the skin. The use of a piece of fabric, or paper, or cloth, facilitates the removal of the composition from the skin, thereby contributing to the ease of use and cleanliness of the present depilatory treatment.
Unlike methods of shaving or cutting hair at the surface of the skin, the present depilatory composition effectively removes hair at the roots, thereby ensuring that the treated area remains hair-free for a prolonged period of time. Since the present depilatory enmeshes and adheres to hair at the skin surface, it is preferable that the hair be of a sufficient length, for example, hair that is not stubble or is not of a very short length, thereby allowing the present composition to optimally adhere to and remove hair effectively from the treated area.
Furthermore, progressively over time, the treated area will produce less new hair, and the hair that eventually grows within the treated area is generally fine hair that is essentially unnoticeable and is of a negligible amount.
The depilatory composition of the present invention can not only remove coarse hair effectively and efficiently, it can also remove fine hair in a similar manner.
Since the depilatory composition of the present invention removes both coarse and fine hair, it is a depilatory treatment that provides for hair removal that is long lasting. The ability to efficiently and effectively remove both coarse and fine hair contributes to the additional benefits of the present invention since the frequency of repeating the treatment is decreased.
Therefore, long intervals of time can pass between treatments, thereby reducing the inconvenience of numerous treatments and consequently reducing the expense.
-4-Another added convenience of the depilatory composition of the present invention is that it is a cold depilatory composition that does not need to be heated prior to use. At room temperature, the depilatory of the present invention is of a malleable, soft, wax-like consistency that is easily applied onto the surface of the skin, and adheres efficiently to hair. Accordingly, the present invention is normally used at room temperature, and does not require any heating prior to its application onto the skin. Therefore, the present invention is very safe to use, and will not burn or damage the skin.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
The depilatory composition of the present invention is significantly different from the depilatory compositions of the prior a.rt. Many conventional depilatories are comprised of chemical or toxic ingredients that are generally unsafe or irritating to the skin. Such undesirable effects have motivated the demand for non-toxic, non-chemical based depilatories.
Consequently, there have been a number of conventional depilatories developed that are composed entirely of natural ingredients. However, many of these compositions are not especially efficient at removing hair from the skin. In addition, there are also some "natural"
depilatories that continue to utilize chemical additives in reduced amounts.
Unlike most conventional depilatories, the depilatory composition of the present invention is comprised entirely of natural, safe, even food grade ingredients, that are non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin. In addition to being comprised entirely of natural ingredients, the present depilatory composition is exceptionally agreeable at removing hair from the skin surface without causing any irritation or damage to the skin. Moreover, the present depilatory composition is additionally convenient since it can be utilized at room temperature, and does not require any preparation prior to use.
The depilatory composition of the present invention is comprised solely of natural, safe, non-toxic ingredients, that are combined to produce a pliable depilatory that is easy to use, and effective at removing hair, both coarse and fine hair, from the hair follicles. More specifically, the depilatory composition of the present invention is comprised of sugar, corn starch, corn syrup, citric acid such as lemon juice or an equivalent acid, and water, such that these component ingredients are present in specific amounts and advantageously prepared according to a specific protocol.
-5-In accordance with the present depilatory composition, sugar is a predominant ingredient that constitutes a major portion of the formulation, whereas the water, corn syrup, citric acid and corn starch are each present in approximately similar amounts.
More specifically, the depilatory of the composition of the present invention consist primarily of sugar, where the preferred sugar is standard granular sugar.
Everyday granular sugar is readily available and relatively inexpensive. However, other sugars, both refined and unrefined, can potentially be used in the preparation of the present depilatory, for example, raw sugar, brown sugar and powdered sugar may alternatively be used, optionally in admixture with standard granular sugar.
The term "corn starch" used throughout the specification denotes a starch, which is a polysaccharide consisting of amylose and amylopectin, derived from corn. Corn starch is a preferred ingredient of the depilatory composition of the present invention.
However, other plant or vegetable starches may be used, for example, tapioca flour and arrowroot flour starches may be used, or wheat starch may also be used as a substitute or partial substitute for the preferred corn starch component of the present composition. Generally speaking, starches which may be used in the present composition have an amylose content in the range of 20 to 32 % by weight, preferably in the range of 24 to 30 % by weight.
The term "corn syrup" used throughout the specification preferably denotes a corn syrup with a dextrose equivalent of from about 42 to 48. Many different corn syrup brands may be used, however, the preferred corn syrup in the composition of the present invention is marketed as Supreme Golden Corn Syrup prepared for Premcorp Sales and Marketing Ltd., and manufactured by Nealanders International Cie., Toronto, Ontario. It has been observed through various experimentations, that molasses and maple syrup are not adequate substitutes for the above specified corn syrup, which is an essential ingredient that binds the depilatory composition into a formulation with a soft, pliable consistency that enmeshes hair at the skin surface without adhering to the skin surface itself.
In accordance with the composition of the present depilatory, citric acid is an essential ingredient. More specifically, an aqueous acid with approximately a 5-7 %
citric acid concentration is an essential ingredient. Concentrated lemon juice is a preferred source of citric acid, and more specifically a concentrated lemon juice with a 5-7 % citric acid concentration is the preferred source of citric acid required for the preparation of the depilatory composition of
-6-the present invention. For example, concentrated lemon juice prepared for SunFresh Limited, Toronto, Ontario was the preferred source of citric acid. Citric acid is an essential ingredient, and more importantly, the concentration of the citric acid used to prepare the depilatory composition of the present invention is critical. The preferred citric acid used in the preparation of the present composition is of a 5-7 % concentration, for example concentrated lemon juice.
Certain other concentrated citrus juices, such as lime juice, or any other citrus acid source with a 5-7 % citric acid concentration may also be used. Therefore, the term citric acid used throughout the specification denotes a citric acid with a citric acid concentration of about 5 to 7 percent.
The composition of the present invention is comprised of about 60-80 % sugar by volume, plus amounts of corn starch, corn syrup, and citric acid each varying from aboutl-20 by volume with an optimum range of 2-15 %, and about 5-15 % by volume of water. In particular, for example, a batch of the present depilatory composition may be comprised of 3 cups of sugar, 5 tablespoons of corn starch, 3 tablespoons of corn syrup, '/4 cup of citric acid, and 90 millilitres of water, which is equivalent to 73 % v/v of sugar, 8 % v/v of corn starch, 4 % v/v of corn syrup, 6 % v/v of 5-7 % concentrated citric acid and 9 % v/v of water.
So long as the relative amounts of each ingredient within the batch are consistent, the present composition may be mixed and prepared in any desired quantities. For example, making a batch that is twice as large would require 6 cups of sugar, 10 tablespoons of corn starch, 6 tablespoons of corn syrup, %2 cup of citric acid and 180 millilitres of water.
The constituent ingredients necessary for producing the present depilatory composition are readily available on a commercial scale, and are relatively inexpensive.
In addition, the production of the depilatory is technically uncomplicated, it does not require an extensive or prolonged period of time, and requires only basic equipment. Therefore, since both the ingredients and the method of production are common and inexpensive, the mass production of the depilatory composition of the present invention is very cost-effective.
The following Tables illustrate the approximate overall, preferred and specific ranges and amounts of each ingredient required for the preparation of the depilatory composition of the present invention.
_7_ Table I illustrates the approximate overall range for each ingredient.

Table III
v/v Sugar 73 Corn Starch 8 Corn Syrup 4 Citric Acid 6 Water 9 In the preferred method of preparation of the present composition, the ingredients are added sequentially and stirred together over medium heat, until the mixture comes to a boil. The sugar and lemon juice are preferably added together at an early stage After the preparation or the _g_ cooking, the composition is allowed to cool to room temperature and then is poured into the desired containers. The resultant product will thicken somewhat after complete cooling but nevertheless will retain a soft, pliable, wax-like consistency. The product can be stored indefinitely at room temperature, particularly if aseptically packaged.
Generally speaking, another method that may be used to prepare the present depilatory composition constitutes the combination of the required amounts of sugar and citric acid, which are combined and mixed over high heat until boiling. Then the required amounts of corn starch, then corn syrup and water are added thereto and the complete mixture is stirred over medium heat until boiling. The resultant mixture is then cooled to produce a depilatory composition.
The cooled mixture may be poured into appropriate containers, for example, the present depilatory composition may be poured aseptically into jars or tubes, or it may be provided in aseptically sealed packages that contain an amount needed for an individual application, or the present depilatory composition may be adhered to one side of a strip of fabric or paper, or embedded therein, such that the present invention is manufactured as a depilatory strip.
Regardless of the packaging format, the depilatory composition of the present invention effectively and efficiently adheres to hair at the skin surface and not to the skin surface itself, thereby allowing for the complete removal of hair from the skin surface without causing any irritation or damage to the skin.
The method of use is uncomplicated and requires the application of the present depilatory to the skin, the composition is then quickly pulled away from the skin.
Preferably, it is pulled away parallel to the skin in the direction that opposes hair growth while the skin is held taut. If the present depilatory is packaged into a jar, a desired amount of the present composition may be scooped out with a spoon or spatula that may be provided, and spread onto the skin. The present depilatory composition has a relatively unlimited shelf life, and can be stored at room temperature indefinitely.
To prevent any contamination to the product that may result from, for example, the repeated scooping out of the product with a spatula, and thus to further prolong the life of the product, the present depilatory may be aseptically packaged into individual packets, thereby eliminating the need for repeated scooping of the depilatory from a common j ar. In addition, the present composition may also be contained in a squeezable tube, from which the composition can be squeezed directly onto the selected area of skin and then evenly spread into a thin coat using a spoon or spatula or any other spreading utensil. In a further embodiment, the present composition may be adhered to, or attached to, a strip of fabric. For example, the present composition may be affixed to a strip of cotton fabric, or a strip of interfacing cloth, or even to a piece of porous paper or gauze, such that the present composition may be applied to the surface of skin. The strip with the affixed depilatory composition that has enmeshed the hair at the skin surface is then easily and quickly peeled away from the skin thereby resulting in the complete removal of hair from the skin surface.
Preferably, the skin should be dry and free of any oils or creams. Oily creams and moisturizers may prevent the product from working optimally, and therefore, it is recommended that, prior to use, the skin be clean and dry. Furthermore, because the present composition is very efficient at removing hair from the skin surface, and because it removes both fine and coarse hair, there is no need for repeat applications over the same area of skin during a treatment. Therefore, since repeatedly going over the same area of skin is not necessary, the present composition is additionally beneficial because it does not cause any additional stress to the skin, and therefore it is capable of completely removing hair from the skin surface without causing additional irritation or damage to the skin.
After the present composition has been applied as a thin coating over the selected area, the depilatory can be removed by covering it with a piece of fabric or paper and then removing the paper and the adhered composition together. The consistency of the present composition not only makes it easy to work, but it also makes its use uncomplicated and clean.
In order to remove the composition after it has been applied to a selected area of skin, the fingers of one hand should hold or lift one end of the fabric sheet applied over the composition, preferably the end that opposes the direction or nap of hair growth, and the other hand should hold the skin taut. Then with one quick motion, the sheet plus the composition may be pulled, peeled or stripped away parallel to the skin surface and in a direction that preferably opposes hair growth, thereby effecting the complete removal of hair.
In addition to being odourless, the depilatory composition of the present invention is water-soluble. Therefore any surface that comes into contact with the present composition can be washed clean with water. For example, if during use, an individual's clothing comes into contact with the composition, it can simply be washed clean with water.
Moreover, when a strip of fabric or cloth is used to facilitate the application and removal of the depilatory, the strip of fabric or cloth can be reused after being washed clean with water and dried.
Since the present composition is made of natural ingredients and is completely water soluble, it is a biodegradable, natural and safe composition.
In accordance with depilatory composition of the present invention, the resultant formulation is easy to work and simple to use, and it is easily applied to the skin such that it adheres specifically and efficiently to hair at the skin surface and not to the skin surface itself.
The present composition enmeshes the hair over the treated area thereby causing it to adhere to the present composition, such that when the depilatory is lifted away form the area, the hair is pulled out by its roots.
The present composition is a cold depilatory, therefore, it is additionally convenient since it does not require any heating or preparation prior to its use. In addition, the present composition is easy to use and is soft and pliable at room temperature. Upon application to the skin, the body temperature will warm the product thereby making it even easier to spread.
Moreover, even when the present composition is produced as a depilatory strip, the present composition will become more involved and enmeshed in the hair at the skin surface due to the individual's body heat, which warms up the composition making it more pliable and workable.
The present depilatory composition adheres to both fine and coarse hair, and allows for the complete removal of hair from the skin surface, thereby prolonging the time between treatments, and consequently reducing the inconvenience of numerous treatments and subsequently reducing the expense of maintaining a hair-free area of skin.
Unlike conventional depilatories which remove skin cells along with hair form the skin surface, the present composition adheres specifically to hair, and not to the skin surface, thereby eliminating or reducing any damage to the skin due to exfoliation. In addition to producing very little pain during the process of hair removal, the present depilatory composition is capable of completely removing hair from within a treated area, and does not cause any damage or irritation to the skin. Moreover, renewed hair growth in the treated area is unlikely for several weeks. The present composition has demonstrated long-lasting effects in hair removal such that the process need not be repeated for many weeks at a time. Usually the treated area remains hair-free for 3 to 10 weeks, depending on the individual and on the area being treated.
The present depilatory composition according to the preferred composition is odourless.
However, fragrances or perfumes may be added if desired, so long as the additives are natural and oil free. That is to say the effectiveness of the present invention should not be changed or diminished in any way with the addition of any fragrances or perfumes. Natural pigmentation can also be supplied, if desired.
The present composition may be used to remove hair from all skin surfaces, for both men and women. Thus, the depilatory of the present invention may be used to remove hair from the legs, face, arms, torso, bikini area, eyebrows, and any other area of skin.
For example, instead of shaving daily, men could use the present depilatory to remove facial hair every several weeks.
Since the present depilatory efficiently removes hair from at the roots, not only is the skin surface hair free, but the treated skin appears to be hair free, such that there is no greyness or shadow beneath the skin surface. In addition to the clean hair free, even stubble free, skin surface that results after treatment with the present composition, hair growth is reduced.
For example, instead of shaving daily, the depilatory needs to be used only once every several weeks to effect a superior hairless facial skin surface. It should be noted that, although the present composition may be used on any area of skin, some areas of skin may be more sensitive to irritation.
Moreover, since individuals vary in their sensitivities to different products or to different treatments, some individuals may experience some irritation or pain with use, while others may not experience any discomfort or irritation.
The present depilatory is additionally advantageous because, with repeated use, even after just one treatment, hair growth within the treated area is reduced, and the hair that grows subsequent to treatment is finer soft hair. Therefore, with the continuous use of the present depilatory, the time interval between treatments will be increased, and since hair growth would progressively be diminished, treatments would become progressively quicker and less labourious.
The following Example illustrates the invention.
Example The following method was used to prepare a depilatory composition of the present invention: 1 cup of sugar, i.e. ~/s of the total amount of sugar and '/4 cup of citric acid, i.e. the total amount of citric acid required, are combined and heated over a high heat while stirring until boiling. Upon boiling another cup, i.e. another ~/s of the total amount of sugar required, is added and stirred until boiling over a medium heat. While continually stirring over medium heat, 3 tablespoons of cornstarch, i.e. 3/5 of the total amount required is added, and the mixture is stirred until it boils. Then 3 tablespoons of corn syrup, i.e. the total amount of corn syrup required, is added and the mixture is stirred until boiling. Upon boiling the final cup of sugar, i.e. the final ~/s of the total amount of sugar required is added, and the mixture is stirred until boiling. Then 2 tablespoons of corn starch, i.e. the remaining 2/5 of the total amount required, is added and stirred until boiling, and then 90 millilitres of water, i.e. the total amount of water, is added and the mixture is allowed to boil. The homogenous mixture is then removed from the heat and is allowed to cool. To facilitate the cooling process, the vessel or container that contains the cooked composition may be submerged partially in cold water, thereby accelerating the cooling process. The resultant cooled mixture will set to a pliable, wax-like consistency to constitute a depilatory composition of the present invention.
While preferred embodiments have been shown and described, it will be understood that there is no intent to limit the invention to such disclosure, but rather it is intended to cover all modifications and alternate applications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
