Abstract

A cosmetic composition comprising a UV-protective amount of at least one rosavin, preferably present in an extract of Rhodiola rosea in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle, and methods of use thereof, including preventing or reducing the signs of photoaging.

Claims (28)

1. A cosmetic composition comprising an effective amount of:
at least one rosavin; and a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.
2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the rosavin is selected from the group consisting of rosarin, rosin and mixtures thereof.
3. The composition of claim 1 which comprises from 0.0001 % to 0.1 % by weight of rosavins.
4. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 further comprising a salidroside.
5. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 further comprising at least from 0.001%
to 0.1%
of tyrosol.
6. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 further comprising a sunscreen selected from the group consisting of water soluble sunscreens, oil soluble sunscreens, inorganic sunscreens, and organic sunscreens.
7. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 wherein the rosavin is provided as part of a rosavin-containing plant extract.
8. The cosmetic composition of claim 7 wherein the plant extract is an extract of Rhodiola rosea.
9. The cosmetic composition of claim 8 wherein the extract of Rhodiola rosea comprises from 1% to 50% rosavins.
10. The cosmetic composition of claim 9 wherein the extract also contains from 0.1% to 50% salidrosides.
11. A cosmetic composition comprising:

an extract of Rhodiola rosea wherein the extract comprises an effective amount of at least one rosavin; and a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.
12. The cosmetic composition of claim 11 further comprising at least 0.1 %
salidrosides.
13. The cosmetic composition of claim 11 further comprising at least from 0.001 % to 0.1 %
of tyrosol.
14. The cosmetic composition of claim 11 further comprising a sunscreen selected from the group consisting of water soluble sunscreens, oil soluble sunscreens, inorganic sunscreens, and organic sunscreens.
15. The cosmetic composition of claim 11 wherein the extract of Rhodiola rosea comprises from 1% to 50% rosavins and from 0.1 to 50% salidrosides.
16. A method of reducing the signs of photoaging on the skin comprising a step of applying a composition comprising an effective amount of at least one rosavin;
and a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.
17. The method of claim 16 wherein the composition further comprises a sunscreen.
18. The method of claim 16 wherein the rosavin is extracted from a root of Rhodiola rosea.
19. The method of claim 16 wherein extract of Rhodiola rosea comprises from 1%
to 50%
rosavins and from 0.1 to 50% salidrosides.
20. A method of inhibiting the effects of UV exposure on the skin comprising applying to the skin a cosmetic composition comprising at least one rosavin in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.
21. The method of claim 20 wherein the composition further comprises a sunscreen.
22. The method of claim 20 wherein the rosavin is extracted from a root of Rhodiola rosea.
23. The method of claim 20 wherein the extract of Rhodiola rosea comprises from 1% to 50% rosavins and from 0.1 to 50% salidrosides.
24. A method of alleviating the effects of UV induced damage on the skin comprising applying to the skin a cosmetic composition comprising at least one rosavin and a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.
25. The method of claim 24 wherein the composition further comprises a sunscreen.
26. The method of claim 24 wherein the rosavin is provided as part of a rosavin-containing plant extract.
27. The method of claim 26 wherein the plant extract is an extract of Rhodiola rosea.
28. The method of claim 26 wherein extract of Rhodiola rosea comprises from 1%
to 50%
rosavins and from 0.1 to 50% salidrosides.
