Description
Process for the production of paper, cardboard or the like. With a shaped mineral coating The invention relates to a method of manufacture of paper, cardboard or the like. with a shaped mineral coating in which a double layer of the mineral coating mass on a circumferential cylindrical Drum formed and dried on this and #this layer one on the contact side with an adhesive layer versphene paper or cardboard web od., the like. fed and 4 is pressed on under a pressure ensuring an intimate connection, after which the coating layer by means of the glued-on paper or cardboard web or the like from the rotating drum is deducted.
It is desirable that the formed mineral coating be everywhere has a uniform thickness, because this is the only way to achieve a uniform opacity - and a more uniform one Shine of the same are guaranteed. Besides. is the toilet connection between the mineral, en coating, layer and the paper or cardboard or the like if the first-mentioned layer does not have any unevenness. Finally takes a coating layer that is flat everywhere when printing, the printing ink is uniform everywhere while this is not the case with thicknesses of the coating layers.
Achieving a uniform layer thickness of the coating layer causes difficulties insofar as in the leveling of the on the tro m-mel applied layer must be avoided under all circumstances that a shift, the Layer or part thereof occurs against the drum surface. Such Displacements would add the shine created by the polished drum surface destroy the coating layer later removed from the drum. Also cause Relative movements of the coating compound in relation to the drum easily damage the polished drum surface, as the mineral coating mass acts like an abrasive works when such relative movements are caused by a solid body.
According to the invention, the leveling on the drum surface applied coating layer avoiding any shifting movements between the layer and the drum surface achieved in that the drum facing away Layer side of the coating layer by means of an air knife known per se in the point in time at which the contact surface of the layer on the drum is smoothed already dry and the outer layer surface is still liquid, while before Peeling off the layer, the outside of which heat is supplied directly.
The procedure is the same when a different shaping surface is used as the carrier C of the coating layer instead of a drum.
The drawing shows exemplary embodiments of a device for carrying out the method according to the invention, namely FIG. 1 shows an end view of the device provided with a rotating drum as a carrier for the mineral coating layer, and FIG. 2 shows a further embodiment of a part of this device in an enlarged view.
In the drawing, 1 denotes a cylindrical cast drum, the cylindrical surface of which is expediently chrome-plated and polished to achieve a high-gloss cast surface. The drum preferably has a diameter of 1.2 to 2.4 m so that it can be operated at speeds which correspond to the speeds of a conventional papermaking machine. The device for applying the mineral coating can then optionally be set up in connection with the paper or cardboard manufacturing machine Preferably, the applicator roll 2 is a counter-rotating roll driven in the direction of arrow A while the casting drum 1 revolves in the opposite direction indicated by arrow B. It has been found that a rubber-coated applicator roll is excellent The coating mass can be added to the roller by means of a scratch list 5. In order to avoid damage to the casting drum 1 , it is advisable to arrange the applicator roller 2 so that the coating mass on it is in contact with the casting drum 1 is, but not the applicator roll 2. In accordance with F i g. 2, therefore, the roller 2 from the drum 1 an exaggerated distance, which is about 0.08 to 0.5 mm .
The mineral coating composition is in the form of a slurry; for example, it consists of 100 parts of pigment, e.g. B. clay, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide or combinations thereof, together with 20 parts of a binder, such as a vinyl acetate emulsion. The slurry contains enough water or other liquid carrier to make the total solids about 55 %.
The surface of the casting drum can be heated from the inside to around 60 and 941 C in order to support the solidification and drying of the coating.
The applied coating is smoothed and leveled by means of the air knife 6, which is arranged in such a way that the direction of the air flow emerging from it intersects the surface of the casting drum 1.
The position of the air knife 6 is important, as is the air pressure with which the Luit hits the free surface of the coating layer. The air knife should be arranged opposite the point of application of the coating mass on the drum 1 so that the outer layer side of the coating is still liquid, but the contact surface of the layer on the drum is already dry, so that the coating does not tear at its contact surface. In an exemplary embodiment, it has been found that excellent results are obtained when the air knife 6 is located about 40 cm from the point at which the applicator roller 2 is closest to the casting surface of the drum 1 . Of course, this position can be changed depending on the operating conditions CD . At the pressure with which the air from the air sensor 6 hits the cover, care must also be taken that the contact surface of the cover on the drum does not tear or be pushed up. A pressure of about 0.035 kg / CM2 or less has been found suitable for this purpose. It has been found that at such a low pressure the air knife can smooth and level the coating to a uniform thickness of about 0.025 mm ". It has also been found beneficial to incline the air knife with respect to the drum surface so that a The angle of inclination can vary, although for most purposes a backward inclination of only a few degrees is sufficient.
After the coating has been smoothed by the air knife 6 , the coating passes under a dryer 7 , which dries the coating completely. The dryer 7 is preferably a compressed air dryer in which hot air is directed onto the free surface of the coating. In this way, heat is supplied to the coating both from the drum surface and from the dryer, so that the drying, which takes place on both sides, is quickly completed.
After drying, the coating is then applied to a paper or cardboard web or the like provided with adhesive by means of the pressure roller 9. pressed on. When the web 8 runs around the roller 9 , it pulls the formed mineral coating associated with it from the drum. As the rotation continues, the more free drum surface meets again with the applicator roller 2 and a new coating is formed.
