Abstract

As shown in FIG. 1, a cylindrical electric toothbrush 1 has a cylindrical brush 2 that is rotated by a motor 3 . The brush 2 has a protective shield or cover 4 for protecting the mouth while the brush is rotating. The protective shield 4 preferably has no sharp edges and a generally circular front 8 . The brush 2 rotates clockwise by pressing a switch 5 and counterclockwise by pressing a switch 6 . The brush 2 can be removed from the motor 3 by pressing a release button 7 . The motor 3 is powered either by a rechargeable or non-rechargeable battery (not shown) or by any AC or DC power supply connected to the motor 3 via a cable 9 . The toothbrush can be hung on a hook or the like by a hook 10 attached to the motor 3 . The brush 2 is mounted on a shaft 11 , which is preferably constructed of hard plastic or some other rigid material that will not bend significantly when pressure is exerted between the brush and the teeth during use of the brush.

As shown in Fig. 2, the motor 3 , the protective shield 4 , the cylindrical brush 2 and the electrical cable 9 are preferably separable. The protective shield 4 can preferably be fastened to the motor 3 by means of a thread 12 which engages with a corresponding thread on the protective shield. A handle 13 on the protective shield 4 facilitates a rotatable attachment of the protective shield 4 to the motor 3 . It will be appreciated that other means of attaching the shield 4 to the motor 3 can be used if desired.

Within the threaded end 12 of the motor 3 is a contoured hole 15 , such as. B. a hexagonal hole in which an oppositely contoured end of the brush 2 is used to connect the motor and the brush, so that the motor 3 brushes 2 when pressing the switch 5 clockwise and when pressing the switch 6 counterclockwise turns. In Fig. 13, a set of surplus switches 24 , 25 and 26 , each performing the same function as the switches 5 , 6 and 7 , is arranged on the back of the toothbrush 1 . It will be appreciated that the switches can be arranged in any position suitable for convenient use, preferably by the thumb.

Fig. 14 shows a cap 27 which is attached to a toothpaste container 28. The cap 27 facilitates the application and distribution of toothpaste on the cylindrical brush 2 when the brush is passed over the cap 27 . The cap 27 includes a semi-cylindrical channel 29 into which toothpaste is dispensed from an opening 30 in the cap which communicates with an opening in the toothpaste tube. A pin 31 on a movable closure 32 makes it possible to close the opening 30 tightly. The movable closure 32 includes suitable locking means for attachment to the cap 27 .

Channel 29 preferably includes arcuate sides 33 and 34 that guide the toothbrush shield when the brush is not exactly aligned with channel 29 . As shown in Fig. 26, the brushes 56 and 57 are connected at their upper ends to the protective shields 58 and 59 by bearings 66 and 67 or other holders which can rotate the brushes with a relatively low friction. A gear 63 transmits movement of the motor 68 from the shaft 64 to the brushes 56 and 57 . In the embodiment shown in FIG. 28, the brushes 56 and 57 have only one cover 72 , which is divided into two halves 73 and 74 . The principal function of the cover 72 is to facilitate separation of the cylindrical brushes 56 and 57 so that the distance between them is sufficient for teeth to fit between them. Half 74 of cover 72 is attached at a point 75 at one end and its other end is fitted into a slot 76 on the other half of the cover. As shown in FIG. 29, the slot on half 73 can be sized to allow lateral movement of half 74 relative to fixed half 73 . The lower portion of the slot 76 is preferably of limited depth to prevent toothpaste from settling there and to allow easy cleaning.

FIG. 30 shows a top view of the brush shown in FIGS. 28 and 29. When the brush is used to clean the lower teeth, the cover 72 is on the upper side. The cap 77 includes a movable closure 80 which has pins 81 and 82 for closing the openings 78 and 79 .

As shown in FIG. 32, toothpaste exits the dispenser through an opening 83 and is distributed over the two dispensing openings 78 and 79 .
