Abstract

The screw cap has a long thin sealing lip (5) which extends from the ring part (3) of the cap against the container mouth (10) and its outer edge (11). In the last phase of screwing it is pressed onto the mouth by a pressure rib (6) attached to the cap part (2). However, because the root (51) of the sealing lip (5) moves even further downward, on the other hand the contact point (53) between the pressure rib (6) and the sealing lip (5) remains in place, the section (55) in between is stretched. He therefore presses against the mouth (10) and in particular against the outer edge (11) of the container (1). This design creates a particularly simple and material-saving screw cap.

Description

The invention relates to a screw cap made of elastic material for containers, in particular for beverage bottles, this screw cap having a cap part and an adjoining ring part with an internal thread.

Screw closures of this type made of elastic material, preferably made of plastic, are known in many embodiments. Numerous developments have been made in this area, especially with screw caps, which are intended for improperly manufactured containers, especially beverage bottles. These bottles are subject to numerous irregularities, depending on the country of manufacture and also on the number of times they are circulated between the bottling plant and the end user, e.g. Manufacturing-related out-of-roundness, but also due to wear, e.g. Notches, broken-off parts etc. Closures have been developed for such bottles, which seal perfectly despite these irregularities. However, it cannot be avoided that a great deal of technical effort was required for this, and that a relatively large amount of material is also used for such closures.

The present invention is based on the consideration that various very large beverage manufacturers have their own, unmistakably recognizable bottles in circulation. These bottles correspond to a relatively high standard in terms of dimensional accuracy and are practically free of the irregularities mentioned, since defective bottles are eliminated. For such areas it is basically an unnecessary opening wall to use closures that meet much more difficult requirements than they are here. So if you succeed in creating a simpler, but still high-quality closure, in which the simplicity also results in a material saving, then this, which is hardly significant for the individual closure, because it may only be a tenth of a gram, given the enormous size The amount of closures required nevertheless leads to enormous savings in production and above all in material costs.

The purpose of the invention is therefore to create a screw cap that is as simple and material-saving as possible. Such a screw cap is characterized according to the invention by the features of claim 1.

An embodiment of the screw cap according to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
  • Fig. L shows a partial cross section through the closure and the container during screwing on the closure, and
  • Fig. 2 shows a same partial cross section with the screw fully screwed.

The screw cap to be screwed onto a container 1 and thereby sealing its mouth 10 has a cap part 2 and a ring part 3 adjoining it in a known manner. The latter is provided with an internal thread 30. The cap part 2 can also one into the mouth 10 of the container 1 have engaging part 4, which, however, is irrelevant to the present invention; it serves as the first seal between the interior of the container 1 and the mouth 10.

The sealing element essential for the present invention is formed by a sealing lip 5, it has its root 51 at a point 52, which is located above the internal thread 30, and from there extends essentially parallel to the underside 20 of the cap part 2 at a distance A from this. As can be seen, the sealing lip 5 is made very thin. Its thickness d, measured at the root 51, is only a fraction of its length L, essentially a fifth and advantageously even less. This sealing lip 5 also extends parallel to the top of the mouth 10 of the container 1 and is intended to seal it and in particular its outer edge 11 under pressure. How this happens is explained below.

A pressure rib 6 is formed on the underside 20 of the cap part 2. It is directed against the sealing lip 5. Their height H must be smaller than the distance A mentioned above, primarily for manufacturing reasons, as can be seen in FIG. 1. The pressure rib 6 has a tip 61, which can either be sharp or slightly rounded. If the screw cap is now screwed on, the sealing lip 5 finally touches the mouth 10 of the container 1 and lies flat on it. When the closure is screwed down further, the point 52 and thus the root 51 of the sealing lip 5 move further downward. While they were still above the level of the mouth 10 in FIG. 1, according to FIG. 2 they are finally below this level.

The sealing lip 5 is therefore placed around the outer edge 11 of the container mouth 10 during this screwing. However, it cannot follow its downwardly moving root 51 for a long time, because the pressure rib 6, like the entire closure, also moves downwards and after a short time touches the sealing lip 5 at a contact point 53 pressed against the end section 54 of the sealing lip 5 and, depending on the elasticity of the material, even partially bores into it. The sealing lip 5 is then clamped between the container mouth 10 and the pressure rib 6. The contact point 53 thus remains stationary with respect to the sealing lip, or in other words, the end section 54 has a constant length and also remains in the same position with respect to the mouth. The section 55 of the sealing lip lying between the contact point 53 and the root 51, on the other hand, is stretched, because by moving the point 52 downward, the distance from this point over the outer edge 11 to the stationary contact point 53 increases continuously. The section 55 thus increases in length. The root 51 can also yield slightly and move towards the container; however, because at point 52 the ring part 3 has a lot more material than the thin sealing lip, this movement is negligibly small compared to the change in length of the section 55.

The stretching of the section 55 also increases, as can easily be seen in FIG. 2, its contact pressure on the outer edge 11, and this and the adjacent mouth surface are therefore well sealed at least up to the contact point 53.

Finally, the press-in pressure of the pressure rib 6 reaches a value which makes it impossible to screw the closure further down. In the case of automatic filling machines, a slip clutch responds, which is arranged between the so-called bell, which unscrews the closure, and its drive. The screwing on of the closure is now complete.

Two annular chambers 7, 8 remain on both sides of the pressure rib 6. The chamber 7, possibly also the chamber 8, can fill with gas under certain circumstances if the contents of the bottle contain a gas pressure-generating liquid such as mineral water and this warms up after filling. A possible pressure in the chamber 8 would only have advantages, however, because then the sealing lip 5 is also pressed upwards onto the outer edge 11 and the mouth 10.

It is apparent from the above statements that a sealing lip is provided here, which is subjected to tension in order to exert a sealing effect. So far, only sealing lips were known, which were either subjected to bending due to application to the container mouth or to pressure by pressing and pressing in their free ends at the mouth. In the present case, however, the sealing effect is brought about in a completely new way, namely by clamping the sealing lip at one point by means of the pressure rib and then stretching as a result of stress due to tension, the tensile stresses occurring in the sealing lip being used for the actual sealing effect.
