Be it known that I, JEANETTE MosBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Oak Park, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brushes, of which the following is a specifi cation.

My invention relates to tooth-brushes and more specifically to that class thereof in which chambers are provided in the handle for the reception of the dentifrice and water to be applied to the teeth by the brush.

The object of my invention is the production of a tooth-brush of the character mentioned which will be of improved construction and eflicient in operation.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

Vith these objects in view my invention consists in a tooth-brush characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangements of part-s all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toothbrush embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on line a2--m of Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections taken on lines g y and z.z respectively of Fig. 2.

The preferred form of my construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a handle 1 which is of ordinary form, bristles 2 being secured in the under side thereof at one end in the usual manner. Formed in said end of said handle are openings or passages 3 which communicate with the bristles 2 as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5.

Fitted over the upper side of the handle 1 is a cover-piece l of convex form, the lower edge thereof fitting snugly the periphery of the handle 1 so as to form a liquid tight connection therewith. One edge of the cover-piece r is hingedly secured at 5 to the handle 1, torsional springs 6 being provided as shown to normally maintain the coverpiece 4 in position above said handle. Provided at the respective extremities of the handle 1 are spring-clips 7 which are adapted to engage lugs 8 provided upon the adjacent ends of the cover member 4: to fasten the latter in operative position upon said handle. Vith the construction disclosed, it will be observed that in order to gain access to the interior of the cover-piece 4 the clips 7 are sprung outwardly to disengage the lugs 8 whereupon the free edge of said cover-piece is swung upwardly.

Provided upon the under side of the cover-piece at is a longitudinally extending partition 9 dividing the chamber formed within said coverpiece into two longitudinally extending compartments 10 and 11, the latter communicating at their forward ends with the openings 3 as will be readily understood. In use, tooth-powder or other dentifrice may be arranged in one of said compartments and water in the other so that when the teeth are brushed with the bristles 2 such water and dentifrice will pass through the openings 3 and be applied to the teeth to effect cleansing thereof.

In filling the brush before use, the coverpiece is released and rocked back in the manner above described so that the compartments 10 and 11 open upwardly. The powder or other dentifrice is now placed in one of the compartments and water in the other. This being done, the handle is rocked into position over the upwardly opening ends of the compartments 10 and 11 rendering said compartments entirely independent of each other and water tight, the partition 9 preventing the water of one compartment entering and mixing with the dentifrice of the other and vice versa. This being done, the brush is ready for use in the ordinary manner.

A toothbrush of the construction as set forth is durable and economical in construction and the same is sanitary in use since the construction is such that the brush may be readily and easily cleaned. The necessity of applying the dentifrice to the brush such as is usual with tooth-brushes of conventional form is dispensed with, the water and dentifrice being automatically applied thereto.

WVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as set forth,

but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A toothbrush comprising a body having bristles secured therein at one end thereof, there being openings formed in said handle communicating with said bristles; and non-communicating water and dentifrice compartments provided at the upper side of said handle communicating with different openings, substantially as described.

2. A tooth-brush comprising a handle having bristlessecured in one side thereof, there being openings formed in said handle communicating with said bristles; and a cover-piece for said handle arranged at the upper side thereof forming noncommunicating water and dentifrice compartments communicating with different openings, substantially as described.

3. A tooth-brush comprising a handle having bristles secured therein at one end thereof, there being openings provided in said handle communicating with said bristies; and a convex cover-piece at the upper side of said handle and hinged thereto forming a chamber communicating with said openings, substantially as described.

4. A tooth-brush comprising a handle having bristles secure-d therein at one end there of, there being openings provided in said han- 3 5 dle communicating with said bristles; a convex cover-piece at the upper side of said handle and hinged thereto, a chamber being formed between said handle and said coverpiece; and a partition dividing said chamber into water and dentifrice compartments communicating with said openings, substantially as described.

5. A tooth-brush comprising a handle having bristles secured therein at one end riphery of the latter and having one side hinged thereto; means for fastening the free edge of said cover-piece to said handle; a chamber being formed between said handle and said cover-piece; and a longitudinally extending partition dividing said chamber 5 into water and dentifrice compartments communicating with said openings, substantially as described.
