Description

W. T. FARRAR.
TOOTH BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY, 31, 1911.
Patented June 3, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
WALTER T. FARRAR, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
TOOTH-BRUSH.
Application filed May 31, 1911. Serial No. 630,508.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER T. FARRAR,
citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of J efferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tooth brushes.
One aim of the present invention is to provide a tooth brush, the bristles of which may be readily renewed when they become worn.
A further object of the invention is to provide a brush of this type so constructed that the bulk of the bristles may be varied to suit the user. I
The invention aims further to provide a tooth brush having removable bristle-carrying plugs designed to be interchangeably fitted in sockets formed in opposite sides of the head of the brush, which head is positioned at an angle to the brush handle so that by arranging the bristle-carrying plugs upon one side of the brush head, the brush will be adapted for use in cleaning the front of theteeth and by locating the bristle-carrying heads upon the other side, the said brush head will be better adapted for cleaning the rear sides of the teeth.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the brush embodying the present invent-ion, illustrating the manner of using the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the brush parts being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 4 is a detail view partly'in elevation and partly in section of one of the bristle tufts.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
In the drawing, the handle of the brush is indicated by the numeral 1 and the shank of the handle by the numeral 2, the shank being formed at its end with a head 3 having oppositely located flat sides. The head 3 extends at an obtuse angle to the shank 2 with the said oppositely located fiat sides located in parallel planes. The head 3 is Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1913.
formed with threaded sockets 4 which extend therethrough and open at the said opposite sides of the head, the sockets preferably extending in a straight row from one end of the head to the other. In connection with the brush there are employed a number of bristle-carrying plugs 5 which are exteriorly threaded, the bristles being indicated by t-henumeral 6. The plugs 5 are adapted to be interchangeably fitted in the sockets 4 at either one side or the other of the head 3 and it is desirable, .when the brush is to be used in cleaning the front surfaces of the teeth, to arrange the bristle-carrying plug, or, plugs in case several are used at the same time, to project from that side of the head 3 which is at an acute an le to the shank of the handle, and when, the rush isto be carrying plugs be provided with each brush,
the handle 1 of the brush is formed with a cavity 7 of sufficient size to receive a number of the said plugs and this cavity 7 is closed by means of a stopper 8 which may be of cork or any other suitable material.
As before stated, the invention contemplates that the bristle-carrying plugs shall be so held that they may dry without coming in contact with the surface upon which the brush is laid when not in use, and to this end, there is removably fitted upon the handle 1, at the end thereof, a cap 9 having perforations 10 in its wall. A cup-like socket .11 is provided in the bottom of the cap 9 and after the brush has been used the bristle'carrying plug is removed from its socket in the head 3 and inserted into the socket 11 in the cap 9 after whichthe cap is fitted upon the handle. The brush may then be laid upon any surface without danger of the bristles coming in contact with the surface, and, due to the provision of the perforations in .the cap, the bristles will dry, although they will not be liable to collect dust while drying.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new 1s:-
A tooth brush having a shank provided with a head disposed at an obtuse angle thereto and having a series of openings therein, which extend through the head from side to side, said openings being internally In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature thrleaded, externally threaded plugs idapted in presence of two witnesses.
to e inserted in the openin s at eit er side of the head, and bristles carried by the plugs, WALTER FARRAR' 5 said plugs and bristles when inserted in the Witnesses:
head from one side terminating short of DELLA HERTZSCH,
the opposite side of the head. JOHN J. FARRAR.
