To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GwILYM THOMAS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brushes and the object of the invention is to provide a brush which may be conveniently attached to a liquid receptacle and which is provided with a channel through which the liquid in the receptacle may pass to the bristles thereby forming a fountain brush.

A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby a supply of liquid may be out off from the bristles.

Further objects of the invention will ap pear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure l is a sectional View showing the device applied to a bottle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the brush removed from the bottle. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the packing ring employed.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a stopper made of wood or other suitable material and which has secured thereto in any suitable manner a bunch of bristles 2. The stopper has a channel 3 extending therethrough, as shown, which is adapted to conduct the liquid from a suitable receptacle to the bristles, as will hereinafter be described. The receptacle is shown at 4 and may be in the form of a bottle, as illustrated, or in the form of a cone having a neck similar to the bottle neck 5, shown in the drawing. Mounted within the neck is a packing ring 6 having a notch 7 formed therein which extends inwardly from its lower edge and forms a channel 8 which is adapted to communicate with the channel 3 in the stopper. By turning the stopper the channel 3 may be carried out of register with the channel 8, so as to prevent any liquid in the receptacle from gaining access to the bristles.

The stopper and packing ring are sold as a unit and are so simple that they may be manufactured at a price which would enable manufacturers of small paint cans or shoe blackening bottles to supply these stoppers with each can or bottle.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is In a device for applying liquid polish, a circular packing ring provided with an inverted U-shaped notch in its lower edge forming a channel adapted to be inserted in an ordinary bottle neck, a stopper rotatable within said ring provided with a bore extending from the lower side edge to the upper central portion of said stopper providing an axially disposed outlet and bristles secured around said outlet.
