Description

G. E. MILLER.
PASTE JAR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-20, 191s.
Patented June 6, 1916.
' on on GEORGE E. MILLER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GARTERS THE. COMPANY, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
PASTE-JAR.
Application filed August 20, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MILLER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paste-Jars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The present invention relates to a jar for containing paste or other adhesives, and pertains essentially to an improved means for closing the jar both in the original package during transportation when the jar requires a tight seal and also after the jar has been opened and during its use.
As will later be more fully explained the jar is initially closed by what will hereinafter he referred to as a primary cover and also by a secondary cover or cap. The primary cover is one carried by the brush, the
handle of which extends through this cover, and is adapted to rest loosely upon the open top end of the jar covering it during the continuing use of the jar and the paste within it. In the original package, however, and during transportation this primary cover forms a seal between the top open end of the jar and the secondary cover or cap which connects with the jar in such manner as to bind the primary cover tight against the top open end thereof securely sealing it.
The invention pertains to further details of construction in functional operation including the sealing of the joint between the brush and primary cover and one which permits also of the brush being moved relatively to the cover so that it may extend to any determinate distance into the body of the jar depending upon the amount of paste therein.
Other details of construction and operation will also be referred to, all of which can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which Figure 1 shows the jar in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the jar, the brush which forms practically a part of the jar in that it assists in its closure, being Specification of Letters Patent.
the body of the jar.
Patented June 6, 1916,
Serial No. 46,474.
Referring to the drawings :1 represents This body is provided with an upwardly-extending, annular neck portion 2 which envelops the opening 3 into the chamber 4 of the jar.
which the secondary cover may be secured to the body of the jar as will later be explained.
6 is illustrative of the paste within the jar, and 7 represents, the brush having a handle 8. Carried by the handle of the brush and resting upon the upper edge of the neck 2 of the jar and covering. the opening therein is-the primary cover 10. The handle 8 of the brush extends through this The cover consists simply of an an nular plate of sheet metal and is secured to the handle in the following manner: On the under side of the primary cover is a dished The neck 2 is provided on the outside with threads 5 by.
plate 11 having outwardly-extending flanges 12 around which the edge of the cover is turned, thereby securing the dished plate 11 to the cover. The plate 11 forms with the cover a small annular chamber containing cork, rubber or the like 13 through which the handle of the brush extends with a tight fit suitable to seal the opening through the cover from the chamber of the jar though permitting of the handle of the. brush being moved relatively to the cover. In this connection it is to be observed that the brush, when the primary cover is in place, hangs vertically and extends down into the chamber of the jar. The union above described effected between the cover or rather the cork 13 and the handle permits of any desired adjustable positioning of the brush withinance or boss, acting to center the cover over the open end of the jar. The depending part 11 is less in diameter than the opening through the neck of the jar and this part extends downwardly for a short distance into this opening and accordingly operates to center the cover over the open end of the ar. 1 Fitting over the primary cover is a cap or secondary cover 15. This cover consists of an annular, flange-forming portion 16 depending from the outer edge of which is an annular threaded rim 1? and rising from the center of which is a hollow extension 18. Upon the application of this cap or secondary cover to the jar the threaded rim 1'? of the cap will turn onto the neck of the jar drawing the flange-forming portion. of the cap into engagement with the primary cover with the upwardly-extending end of the brush inclosed within the extension 18 of the cap. \Vhen the flanged portion 16 of the cap is drawn into engagement with the cover it forces the same hard against the upper edge of the neck of the jar, thereby securely sealing the opening into the jar. For mak ing the joint more secure a fibrous washer 20 is preferably interposed between the priniary cover and the top edge of the annular neck of the jar. This washer is made of any fibrous or other. suitable material and fits around the annular dished portion 11 of the cover.
The cap or secondary cover 15 is applied at the time of the initial packaging of the paste and during transportation, which accordingly insures a substantially perfect sealing of the paste at such time. During the use of the paste this cover is intended to be dispensed with and the jar closed by the primary cover 10, which either with or without the washer 2O affords a sufficient covering for the jar during the use of the paste inasmuch as the jar remains at all times in an upright position. The portion 11 of the cover operating as a centering de-- vice as above described, enables the primary cover to always fit properly over the opening into the jar even though the'brush be carelessly returned to the jar. lVhen it is desired to more securely seal the jar this may be done simply by the application to it of the secondary cover.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a paste jar, the combination comprising the body of the jar having an opening into it, a primary cover for said opening, a brush having a handle extending through said cover, a casing attached to said cover and located on the under side thereof to depend therefrom into said opening, said casing having a filling of cork or other material through which the handle of said brush extends, a washer arranged upon said casing and interposed between said cover and the top edge of the jar around the opening in it, and a secondary cover attachable to the body of the jar to have a drawing engagement with said-primary cover upon the application of said secondary cover to the jar.
