, To all whom/ it may concern: `Be it known that I, ANDY JHN MELIN,
l' a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of- Wal1ace, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in a Combined Comb and Tooth-Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n `a combined comb and tooth-brush holder,
and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specificall claimed.
T e principal object of the invention is to provide a toilet article comprising a comb and a tooth-brush, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable and elcient in operation, and so made that its parts may be folded into a compact form and thus maintained, so as to be readily carried in the pocket of a traveler, if desired.
Another object of the invention, is to so construct the device that the brush will normally be tightly inclcsed within a oasin therefor, so as to protect it from dust an exposure to lint and the like, yet can be readily extended from the casing and supported thereby, as well as, by the comb, in its o erative position.
Ot er objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawing which serves to illustrate an embodiment of the invention Figure l is a side view of a combined comb and tooth-brush holder embodying the invention, showing the parts in their folded or normal positions. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the holder showing by continuous lines the positions the toothbrush and the powder box will occupy, when the latter is used and when the parts-are in their normal positions and by dotted lines at one end of the figure, about the position the toothbrush will occupy when extended from the holder, and at the otherrend of the gure, by dotted lines about the osition the holder will occupy when the brus is being removed therefrom and extended. Fig. 3 is a crow sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. positions. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View of a lportion of the comb and holder and a part of the brush handle, showing a modification in the construction of the holder and the locking spring therefor and Fig. 6 is an end view ofy the construction shown in Fig. 5.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
The reference numeral 8 designates the holder for'the comb and brush, and a powder box, if desired, and said holder may be made of any suitable size, form and material, but preferably of about the shape shown in the drawing, that is to say, substantially horse-shoe shaped in cross-section with its ends closed, thus forming a cavity for the reception of the toothbrush and one or more other articles, such as a box of tooth powder or tooth paste. At one of its ends, which l will term the hinged end, the holder or casing 8 is provided` at each of its sides with a downwardly extended lug 9 in the upper portion of which is transversely lo cated a pivot 10 which is extended transversely through a suitable opening in the reinforcing strip 11 for the comb 12, which comb, may be of the ordinary or any suitable kind. Asis clearly shown'in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the reinforcing strip 11, is provided in its lower portion with a longitudinal groove 13 in which the back or upper portion 14 of the comb is located and may be held therein by means of wedge-shaped pins 15 extended transversely through the strip 11 and back 14 of the comb. The upper portion of the strip 11 is provided with .a longitudinally extended tenon or reduced portion 16 which is of suiiicient width to fit snugly between the lower portion of the sides of the holder or casing 8, as is clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing. vThat end of the casing 8 opposite its pivoted en d is provided with an inwardly extended enlargement 17 which terminates short Yof the casing or holder and at a point some distance above the upper surface of the tenon or projection 16 as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 4 of the tenon or projection 16, and located at a suitable point inwardly of the inner end of the enlargement 17 of the casing. The lug or projection 2l is preferably extended through an open slot in the end of the handle 19, whichhandle is pivotally connected to said lug by means of a suitable pivot, pivotally secured to that end of the comb 12 adjacent to the end of the casing 8 having the enlargement 17 is a catch 22 which has at its upper end a hook 28 to engage a. pin 24 on the adjacent end of the casing. This catch is employed to secure the comb and casing or holder together after the tooth brush has been folded into the position shown by continuous lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing. By providing the casing or holder 8 with an en largement 17, it is apparent that after the holder has been raised to about the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and after the tooth brush has been turned on its pivot to the position shown by dotted lines in said figure, the casing can be lowered so that the enlargement 17 thereof will rest on the handle 19 and firmly hold the brush in its extended position for use.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing is shown a modification in the construction of the device which consists in constructing the parts and arranging them, as above set forth, with the exception that the enlargement 17 of the former construction, is omitted from the casing or holder 8 thus leaving its end open as is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, which open end will be closed by means of a spring catch 25 which is pivotally secured at its lower end to the back 14 of the comb. In this modied construction a rod or pin 26 is extended transversely from one of the sides of the casing to the other side thereof, and isso located that when the handle 19 of the tooth brush is extended to about the position shown in Fig. 5 said pin or rod will rest on the upper surface of the handle and securely hold the tooth brush in its operative position. It is obvious that-a box 29 containing tooth powder or tooth paste may be located in the cavity of the casing or holder, as there will be ample room for the same between the brush and the end of said cavity.
By constructing the device according to my invention, it is evidentthat a very convenient and compact toilet article will be provided, which can be readily carried in the pocket, if desired and that when the parts are in their closed positions the tooth meeste brush will be protected from dust and the like, yet will be ever ready and convenient for use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a combined comb and toothbrush, the combination with a hollow casing or holder, of a comb-carrying strip pivotally connected at one of its ends to one end of said holder and adapted to lie along and close one edge of the latter, a tooth-brush having one end of its handle pivotally connected to the saidstrip, at a distance from its free end, and means carried by the casing or holder to rest on said handle when the brush is extended from the cavity of the holder and the said strip is returned to its normal position.
2. In a combined comb and tooth-brush, the combination with a hollow casing or holder, of a comb-carrying strip pivotally connected at one of its ends to one end of said holder and adapted to lie along and close one edge of the latter, a tooth-brush having one end of its handle pivotally connected to the said strip, at a distance from its free end, means carried by the casing or holder to rest on said handle when the brush is extended from the cavity of the holder and the said strip is returned to its normal position, and means to secure the free ends of the holder and strip together.
3. In a combined comb and tooth-brush, the combination with a hollowycasing having its side walls spaced apart in parallelism at one of the edges of the casing and provided at one of its ends with an inwardly extended enlargement, of a comb-carrying strip pivotally connected at one of its ends t0 the end of the holder opposite that end thereof having said enlargement, the said strip having on its surface adjacent to the holder a longitudinally extended tenon to lit between the sides of the holder at one of its edges a tooth-brush having one end of its handle pivotally connected to the said tenon at a distance from its free end, and means carried by the said strip at its free end to engage the free end of the holder for the purpose of securing them together.
