' To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK MCLAUGHLIN,
a citizen of the United States, residing in vice especially designed for use with plastic or fluid material, the object of my invention being to eii'ect discharge of a given quantity of the material whenever such discharge is desired and to prevent discharge of material at all other times. l, A special feature of my invention is a shaving brush having this object in view.

A device constructed in accordance with my invention may be used for dispensing plastic soap, grease, lubricant, or other material susceptible of flowing under pressure. For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have selected a shaving brush, and in Fig. 1 the brush material is vshown as lcarried by a head 1, threaded or otherwise removably mounted upon the handle .member 2, in order that it can, after use, be removed from the handle for sterilizing purposes and readily replaced by a sterilized brush mem# ber t0 which fresh soap is supplied from the handle.
- The handle member is in the form of a tubeopen at the upper end and having at the lower end a nozzle 3 which projects into -the mass of bristles carried by the brush member 1', this nozzle having, at its lower v end, a valve seat normally closed by a valve 4, as shown in 1, so as to prevent 'the delivery of the soap to vthe mass of bristles except at such times as the valve 4 may be lifted from its seat.
The plastic soap is, by preference, conv vtained in a cartridge 2a fitting snugly to the interior of the tubularhandle 2 and open at both ends which, prior to the introduction of the cartridge into the handle, are `closed by readily removable caps. Snugly fitting to the inner wall I of the cartridge is a 'plunger 5 having a central internally threaded nut which engages a screw stem 7 centrally located in the handle and secured at its upper end, in any desirable manner,
to a revoluble ring 8, the latter being located beyond the removable cap 9 which normally closes the upper end of the tubularA handle 2. The ring 8 has a bottom closure I0 in which are formed diametrically opposite openings l1l through which project downwardly extending fingers 12 located at the opposite sides of a disk 13, which is thereby caused to rotate with the ring `8.
The fingers 12 also project downwardly through diametrically opposite openings 14 in the fixed cap 9 and those portions of the fingers which enter the openings 14 have one edge cam-shaped and the opposite edge straight, as shown in Fig. 2.
Located above and bearing centrally upon the disk 13 is` a spring 15 which consists preferably of a hub with radially projecting arms, .the latter bearing upon a. plate 16 which closes the top ofthe hollow ring 8, as shown in Fig. 1.
The screw stem 7 is tubular and the, valve 4 has a stem 17 which projects upwardly through said screw stem and is secured to the disk 13 so as to partake of` any vertical movement imparted to the latter.
Owin to the fact that the inwardly projecting ngers 12 of the disk 13 are abrupt on one face and inclined'on the opposite face,
` said fingers have both a cam and a ratchet action, that is lto say, they permit turningof the ring 8 in a direction which carries-the 1nclined faces of the fingers into engagement with the adjoining edges of the openings 14 in the cap 9, the lingers then rising over said edges and traveling forwardly .in'contacty' with theback of the cap. Turning of the' clined faces oi the lingers l2 into contact with the forward edges of the openings lll in the cap 9 will cause lifting of the disk 13, valve stem 17 and valve Li and compression of the spring l5 until the ngers l2 are free from the openings la and bear upon the back of the cap 9. Such bearing will continue for a half turn of the ring 8 or until the lingers l2 again register with the openings lll, whereupon the recoil of the spring 15 will cause the Singers to again enter the openings lll prior to a repetition of the operation on the nent half turn of the ring 8.
Buring the entire half turn of the ring and of the screw stem 7 the plunger 5 will be ted forwardly and thus cause a given amount of the plastic soap to be delivered from the forward end of the nozzle 3 into the brush, but, as soon as the hall' turn has been completed, the valve 4 will again move forwardly onto its seat and thereby arrest any further delivery ci soap from the nozzle. This cutting on of the iiow is a positive cut od and hence preferable to one in which cessation oie flow simply depends upon cessation of the forward movement oi the plunger 5, because, owing to the fact that the soap is a plastic body and is always under more or less pressure, such flow might, in the absence oi a positive cut 010i, continue for some time after the cessation of the forward movement ci the plunger.
lWhen the cartridge 2a has been emptied oi its contents the Ecap 9 may be removed, carrying with it the ring 8, vscrew stem 7, valve stem 17V and the parts connected to or cooperating therewith. rl`he empty cartridge shell may then be removed and a full cartridge inserted in the tube 2 in place of the same and, after screwing back the plunger 5 to the top ci the screw stein 7, the parts may be restored to their operative positions by reapplying the cap 9. ln orderV to maintain the ring 8 in its proper vertical position in respect to the cap 9 the screw stem 7 has, at the top, a flange or shoulder bearing against the under side of said capi, as shown in lig. l.
lf it is desired to lessen the amount of soap delivered to the brush on each operation of the ring 8 the number of equidistantly spaced lingers l2 and openings let may be increased, or iii a longer iiow is desired the number ot such fingers and openings may be diminished.
ln Fig. 3 tor instance l have shown a construction Vin which the cap 9 has but one opening 14a and there is but one finger 12a Jfor cooperation therewith.
ln the latter case l preier to substitute for the dislr i3 a lever 20 i'ulcrumed at one end at one side of the ring 8 and having, at the opposite end, a depending linger 12a, said lever bearing, at a point between the iulcrum and the finger, upon a collar 18a, or other incassi equivalent device on the valve stem 17, which collar takes the place of the disk 13 shown in F ig. l.
ln each of the devices thus far described conjoint and cooperative action of the plunger 5 and valve 4 is edected by the partial rotation of the ring El.`
ln the construction shown in Fig. fi, the cartridge 2a is provided at its rear end with a cap 27 in which is revolubly mounted the rear end of the hollow screw stem 7, the latter projecting through the cap and having a notched iange 2S, which is engaged by ngers 29 projecting forwardly from the hub of the ring 8 so as to insure the rotation of the screw stem 7 with said ring` 8.
ln this case each cartridge is provided with its own screw stem and plunger which are discarded with the empty cartridge.
rllhe cartridge has formed in one side a depression 30 engaged by an internally proiecting lug 3l on the handle member so as to prevent turning oi the cartridge with 'the screw stem 7. l
lr" the cartridge has the nozzle 3 formed upon its 'forward end, the handle member 2 may consist oi a simple tube with permanent closure at the rear end and open at 'the iront end.
l claim:-
l. ln a device for dispensing plastic or duid material, the combination ci a tubular container for said material, Asaid container having a discharge' opening at its forward end, a plunger for imparting pressure to said material, means for moving said plunger Jforwardly, a valve seated in said discharge opening of the container, a longitudinally movable valve stem, and means for sinultaneouslv imparting forward movement to the plunger and rearward movement to said valve stem.
2. ln a. device for dispensing plastic or rluid material, the combination of a tubular container i'or said material, said container having a discharge opening at its forward end, a plunger for imparting pressure to said material, said plunger having a central threaded opening, a hollow screw stem engaging said threaded opening of the plunger, a valve seated in said discharge opening oi the container, a valve stem passing through said hollow screw stem, means for rotating said screw stem, and cam mechanism whereby as the screw stem is 'turned forwardly the valve stem will be alternately raised and lowered.

In a device for dispensing plastic or fluid material, the combination of a container for said -material, a valve for controlling the discharge of material from said container, a plunger for imparting pressure to said material, a tubular screw stem in threaded engagement with. said plunger, a rotatable ring connected to said screw stem, a valve rod separate from said screw stem, but extending through the same, and an operating device for said rod in engagement with said ring, said operating device comprising a member in engagement with the valve rod, cam mechanism rotating with the ring and serving duringv continuous forward rotation of the ring to first raise and then release the valve rod member, and resilient means acting on said valve rod member to lower the same when it is released from the action of the cam mechanism.
5. In a device for dispensing plastic or Huid material, the combination of a container for said material, avalve for controlling the discharge of ma'terial from said container, a plunger for imparting pressure to said material, a tubular screw stem -in threaded engagement with said plunger, a rotatable ring connected to said screw stem, a valve rod separate from said screw stem, but extending through the same, and an operating device for said rod in engagement with said ring, said operating device comprising a member in engagement with the valver rod, a Enger projecting from said member and having a cam face, a fixed member for engagement with said cam face, whereby as the ring is turned forwardly the valve rod will be first lifted and then released, and elastic means for depressing the valve rod when the same is released from the control of the lifting device.
6. The combination, in a device for dispensing plastic or fluid material, of a container for said material, a valve for controlling the discharge therefrom, a valve rod, a plunger for imparting pressure to the ma- JSerial in 'the container, a tubular screw stem in threaded engagement. with said plunger, a rotatable ring connected to said stem, a valve rod separate from said screw stem, but extending through the same and a lifting device for said rod operatively connected to said ring, said lifting device comprising a member in engagement with the valve rod, a finger projecting from said member, said finger having one inclined face and one abrupt face, and a fixed member for engagement with said fingers, said fixed memberk serving during'continued forward movement of the ring to first lift and then release the valve rod and then prevent backward;` turning of the ring.
