FOUNTAIN-PEN.

I Specification of Letters Patent No. 12,727, dated April 17, 1855.

Too "whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGH K. .MCOLEII- LAND, of Eldersville, in the countyof VVashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and lmproved Fountain-Pen; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, makinga part of this specification, said drawing being a longitudinal section of my improvement.

The natureo f my ginvention consists in p the peculiar construction of the implement as will be hereafter fully shown and described, whereby thepen is supplied from a reservoir or :receptacle with a requisite quantity ofandin a simple and eflica- .ClOllS manner. 1

i To enable others skilled in the art to make and usemy invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents the handle of the pen, which i is a metallic tube, having a cap or top plece p i (a) at its upperend whichscrews or slips on the other I portion The cap (a) is provided with a small opening (6) theuse of which will be shown hereafter.

Within the handle A there is a bag or receptacle B constructed of india rubber or other proper material. This bag or receptacle is connected at its lower end to a tube 0,; the inner end of which is screwed into the lower end of thehandle A. The tube Gig of a gradualftaperform as shown in. the drawing and: its extremity-is provided with a button or spur. (5 The portion of the tube 6 at its junction with the bag B is considerably larger in diameter than 'the other portion so that a slide (Cl) is formedon which a-pen holderD is fitted.

The end of the tube C is provided with a A valve (6) constructed similarly to a key of a. musical wind instrument. This valve fits over a seat (f) whlch contains one or more apertures WlllCh communicate with the 1nterior of the tube C. qThe valve iskept over the seat(f'). by a spring (g). The stem of the valve isprovidedwith a smallkey (h-l connected to the stemby a joint or pivot (i). The pen holder 1) is of tubular form.

The implement is used in the following manner. The bag or receptacle B is filled with ink by detaching the cap or top (a) of the handle A and opening the upper end of the bag or receptacle, or thetube C may be unscrewed from the lower end of the bag and the ink poured in. The case H is of course detached from the holder D and handle A and the ink within the bag or re cept-acle B will by its own gravity pass into the tube C. Now if the key (71.) be pressed down by the fore finger the valve (6) will of course open and the ink will pass through the seat (f) and fall upon the sponge G.

The sponge of course becomes saturated with ink and the requisite quantity will pass through the openings or channels (9') into the pen F. The valve (e) is operated when necessary and ,by merely tapping the key (it) with the fore finger! This may be done without any inconvenience while writing. The slot (170) is made in the holder to allow the finger to act upon the key. The sponge G prevents the ink from passing too rapidly into the pen, and the button or spur (c) prevents the sponge from coming in contact with the valve.

The valve seat (f) may be provided with different sized apertures so as to admitthe ink to flow more or less rapidly from the tube Q, and different seats may be made to accompany each implement, the valve seats being screwed into the tube.

The opening (6) in the cap (a) is to admit air and allowthe bag B to collapse as the inkpasses from it..

I do not claim separately any of the within described parts; but

What I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
