Description

C. S. MCPHEE. BLACKING AND POLISHING APPLIANCE. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 16. 1917.

I thrown CLEMENT S. McPHEE, 0F NEWTON,'MASSA CHUSETTS.
BLACKING AND POLISHING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 191 8.
Application filed January 16, 1917. Serial No. 142,718.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLEMENT S. MCPHEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newton, in the county of Mid- 5 dleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blacking 'and Polishing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blacking and polishing appliances and is an improvement of the. device shown and described in my pending application, filed June 4, 1914, and having. the Serial No. 843,076.
In the present invention it is my object to provide a novel form of container adapted to be detachably secured upon the back of a combined brushing and polishing appliance, whereby the polishing liquid or paste which is contained in a tube or other flexible means, may be dispensed therefrom to the article to be polished without soiling the hands of the person using the device.
Further objects of my invention will be better understood from. the followin'gdetailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference numerals denote corresponding parts in all the views.
eferring to the drawings Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my invention,
Fig. 2, is a view of the rear end portion of my device,
Fig. 3, is a similar view of the front portion, the dispensing tube being omitted,
Fig. 4, is a detail sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2, I v
Fig. is a detail sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1, and
.0 Fig. 6, is a view in perspective of the cont'ainer detached. v
In the drawings, 10 is the body portion of a Well known form of brushing and pol- -ishing appliance having a brush element 11 5 and a polishing element 12. The brushing and polishing elements arepreferably so disposed that they present their operative portions in planes at a small angle to each other, 2'. e., when the brush; is being used, the polishing member is tilted up a little so as to be out of the way..and likewise when the polishing member is in use the brush is similarly tilted up. However, it is to be understood that any other form of brushing and polishing appliance may be used than the one I have illustrated.
close the side edges 16 clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5 of theof and is adapted to house a tube or other flexible element havingblacking material which it is desired to apply to an article to be polished. The tube is of the usual form and has its discharge end adjacent the brushing element 11. The container 13 is of a form to snugly fit the hand of the user and provides a suitable hand-hold not otherwise found on the usual blacking brush, andis preferably constructed from a suitable blank ofsheet metal. Its upper edges and corners are rounded as shown at 14, and its side edges 15 are extended downwardly and inof the member 10 as' drawings.
The rear end 17 of the container 13 termis nates adjacent the upper edge of the member 10, and has centrally formed therein a notch 18 for a purpose which will presently be apparent.
The front or discharge end 19 of the container 13 has formed therein a slot 20 in which is'adapted to be inserted the neck of the tube of polishing material, and has a pair of ears 2121 which project doWnwardly overv the end surface ofjthe member 0 and serve as stops.
One of the side walls 15 of the container 13 is provided with a slot 22 for the reception of the usual winding key 23, that the polishing material may be forced out of the tube in the usual well known manner.
The container 13 is-detachably secured to the body 10. Each side wall 15 has its lower edge bent inwardly approximately at right angles to form a pair of oppositely arranged extensions 24 adapted tobe engaged within correspondingly arranged 1 container 13 is mounted upon the back the brushing and polishing appliance 10,
grooves 25 formed in the body 10. The
members 24 extend the entire length of the side walls 15, likewise the grooves 25 extend the entire length of the side. walls 16 of the body 10.
To securely lock the container 13*upon the body 10 and prevent its accidental displacement, a latch 26 preferably formed from flat springlike metal is suitably secured to the upper face of the body 10 adjacent the end having the polishing means 12. The latch 26 is of a width slightly less than the notch 18 formed in the end 17 of the con tainer 13 and is provided with an upstruck portion 27 which engages said end wall i above said notch and'prevents longitudinal movement of the container with respect to the body 10. It Will be observed upon referring to the drawings that the distance between the portion 27 of the latch 26 and the end 19 of the container 13 is such that when the container is slid upon the body 10 the ears 2l-21 of the end 19 of the container bear against the end portion of body 10 as previously described.
To replace a tube in which all the polishing material has been dispensed, extending portion 28 of the latch 26 is depressed, this releases the upstruck portion 27 and the container may be slid, or Withdrawn from the body 10.
The grooves are in the nature of guideways and When 'it is desirable to replace the container 13 upon the body 10,'the members 24 are inserted in the end of the grooves 25 andthe container pushed to the rear end of the body 10, when the spring latch 26 is reached it is depressed slightly and the upstruck portioii' 27 engages the end Wall 17 thereby locking the container 13 upon the body 10, as previously described.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim is, I
In combination, a brush back, having longitudinally disposed grooves in the edges thereof,'a container having side 'flangesfitting in the said grooves, said container having an end with a vertically disposed recess therein, earsforming extensions of the said end and adapted to abut an end of the brush back, said container having a longitudinally disposed slot in its side Wall, a spring latch anchored to the brush back and normally engaging the end of the container for preventing its movement, and a collapsible polish holder interposed between the container and back and having its discharge end projecting through the recess in the end of the said container, and a Winding key on said holder extending, through the slotof the container.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
