JOHN AULD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ERASER-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Appflcation filed May 17, 1918. Serial No. 235,102.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN AULD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eraser-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved eraser holder and is particularly adaptable for holding long rectangular erasers.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical holder into which the eraser can readily be slipped and frictionally held during use of the combination, the construction being such that the eraser may be swung into various positions on the holder and the holder being provided with a' brush for cleaning a surface after erasure thereon.
My improved device is clearly illustrated on the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a plan view,
Fig. 2 is a side view,
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on plane 33, Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is an end view.
The holder is a U-frame 5 bent from a length of fiat metal bar preferably of springy material. The outer ends of the bar have openings 6 and 7 for the insertion of tubular rivets 8 and 9 which pivotally support the U-shaped jaw members 10 and 11 at the U-frame ends. These jaw members are bent up of sheet metal blanks of any desired shape and the width of the jaw members between their wings a and b is such as to more or less frictionally receive between them the sides of erasers, such as E.
When the U-frame 5 is formed its sides are preferably bent toward each other beyond parallelism so that when an eraser is inserted in the jaw members the U-frame sides must be spread apart and will then exert clamping action on the eraser to hold it firmly in position. The inner projecting ends of the rivets will be pressed into the eraser material and will assist in holding it securely in position during use of the structure. When the eraser is inserted it can be readily swung with the jaw members on their pivots into any angular position relative to the U-frame, for under different conditions different angles are more desirable for accomplishing the best erasing results, the holder serving as a grip.
I preferably provide a brush on the holder for cleaning an erased surface. The brush structure shown comprises a sheet metal cup 12 and the bristles 13 held therein by wire 14. Bristles are first assembled in parallel arrangement and then a bunch bent intermediate its ends and a length of wire inserted through the bend. The wire ends 0 and d are then drawn through holes 15 and 16 in the base of the cup 12, and the bend of the bristle bunch will be securely seated in the cup. The wire ends are then inserted through the holes 17 and 18 in the yoke of the frame 5 and their inner ends soldered, burred, or otherwise secured with reference to the frame whereby the cup 12 is securely fixed to the frame.
I thus provide a simple, neat and practical holder for erasers which will permit erasers to be used with greater precision and to better advantage. As the eraser becomes worn away the holder will still permit accurate use of the remaining eraser end and there will consequently be less wastage.
I do not of course desire to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement shown as changes and modifications can no doubt be made which would still come with in the scope of the invention.
I claim as follows:
1. An eraser holder comprisin a U-frame, jaw members pivotally supported at the ends of said frame for receiving an eraser.
2. An eraser holder comprising a U-frame of spring metal, U-jaws pivoted at their bases to the ends of said U-frames with their sides opposed to each other to receive an eraser between them.
3. An eraser holder comprising a U-frame of spring metal, U-shaped jaws, pivot members extending through the ends of said U- frame and the bases of said jaws to pivot said jaws, the sides of said jaws extending horizontally toward each other to receive an eraser.
4:- An eraser holder comprising a U-frame of spring material, U-jaws at the ends of said U-frame for receiving and holding an eraser.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 14th day of May, A. D. 1918.
J OHN AULD.
