Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 27, 1916, Serial No. 122,827. Renewed. August 8, 1918. Serial No. 248,992.
To all 'wlwmz't may concern:
Be it 'known that I, J ESSE P. VAN DYKE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at- -ing'to the shoes.
The object of the invention is 'to produce a simple and efficient dauber of this character which will prevent unnecessary waste of The invention consists in the structure hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a section of devices emodying the preferred form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary like view thereof to an enlarged scale. a
- Referring to Figs..1 and 2, the numeral 5 designates a hollow handle of which one end is closed by a detachable cap 6 and having a tubular portion 7 extending from the other end to 'apartition or wall 8. A block 9 of wood orother Suitable material serves as a holder for the bristles 10 of the brush.
At or about its center, the block is provided-with a relatively small hole 11 communicating with the interior of a tube 12 which is bent at 12 and extends axially through the handle part 7 and wall 8 into the chamber 13 of said handle.
14 represents a collar provided on' the tube 12 and serves as a slidable bushing within the handle part 7. The tube end which is within chamber 13 is screw-threadedto engage an internally threaded cap 15 serving as a closure for the tube end and also as a stop which is arrested by the wall 8 to limit the outward movement of the tube in opposition to a helical spring 16 interposed between such wall and the collar 14.
The wall 8 in which the tube is sleeved is made rather thick to afford a closure for a port-17 provided in the periphery of tube 12 when the latter is yieldingly held bvthe spring in the position in which it is indicated in Fig. 1.
The operation of the above described .device is as follows:
The chamber 13 of the handle is filled with the fluid blacking while the cap 6 is removed. Before using the brush the tube Patented m. 11, rare.
12 is pushed against the power of spring 16 into the chamber 13 until the port 17 affords communication between the chamber and the interior of the tube, whereupon the latter becomes filled with the fluid, said tube being of a size to accommodate a charge of blacking sufficient for an average pair of shoes.
The spring 16 is then allowed to assert itself to restore the brush and the attached tube 12 into the positions illustrated in Fig. 1. The daube'r is then ready to be employed to apply blacking to shoes, or the like, such blacking being fed through the hole 11 for distribution by means of the brush.
What I claim isi 1. A' brush of the class described comprising a reservoir having a cylindrical portion and a cone-shaped portion, a partition having a central opening formed in the reservoir at the juncture of the two portions collar carried by the tube and slida'bly positioned at all times within the cylindrical portion of the reservoir and constituting a closure for the outer end thereof, and a spring surrounding said tube between the flange and collar serving normally. to rc-' tain the tube in positionto cause the feed hole thereof to be outside of the partition, said spring being yieldable to pressure exercised to shift the tube to present the feed hole thereof into position for the tube to receive a charge from said reservoir.
2. A brush of the class described comprising a reservoir having a cylindrical portion and a partition having a central opening. a brush carrying tube extending through the cylindrical portion of said reservoir and through thesaid opening. the tube being closed at its inner end and having an aperture in its side wall normally closed by the adjacent face of the flange, an annular colradial aperture therein is closed by the adlar fixed to said tube and in frictional conjacent face of said partition. tact with the inner wall of the cylindrical Signed at Seattle, Wash, this 22nd day 10 portion of said reservoir, and a coil spring of September, 1916. 5 surrounding said tube and interposed be- JESSE P. VAN DYKE. tween said flange and collar normally to Witness;
maintain said tube projected so that the E. PBON.
