FOLDING TOOTH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed. September 8, 1917. I Serial No. 190,332.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AnoLrn H. HENDRICK- SON a citizen of the United States, residing at (drland, inthe county of Glenn, State of California, have invented a new and useful Folding Tooth-Brush; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the-invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The. present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tooth brushes, and has forits object to provide a device of this character which is collapsible and embodies novel features of construction whereby it can be compactly folded and carried in the pocket or packed in a small amount of space.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a folding tooth brush which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be quickly folded or extended for use, and which provides a dustproof and antiseptic compartment for the bristles of the brush.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the. novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a collapsible tooth brush constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same as folded.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with one of the side pieces of the handle removed to show the interior construction of the handle.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the brush when opened up for use, a partly closed position being indicated by dotted lines, and portions being-broken away and'shown in section. I
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the brush when opened up for use.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through the handle, on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the antiseptic receiving side strips.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated and B the brush element which is pivotally.
connected to the handle and adapted either to be collapsedagainst the handle or swung" outwardly into alinement therewith. The handle A has a hollow formation and includes opposed and spaced side plates 1 and a back 2 which is interposed between the lower edges of the side plates, one end of the back terminating in a spring arm 2, while the opposite end thereof is provided with an end plate 3. Suitablefastening members such as the rivets l are provided for securing the parts of the handle together. The interior of the handle is subdivided by an intermediate transverse partition 5 into a brush receiving compartment C and a tooth paste receiving com-partment D. i I V The brush member B is formed with a head 6 which carries the bristles 7 and also with a shank 8 which extends longitudinally from one end of the head 6 and terminates in a pivot p1ate'9 which 'is received between the free ends of the side plates l of the V handleand mountedf upon the" pin 10. H Flat sides 9 are provided upon opposite sides of the pivot plate 9 and arranged for engagement with the spring arm 2* of the back, to hold the brush in either an open or a closed position.- The opening ,of the brush is limited by engagement of a shoulder 11 at the end of the shank 8 with the end of the spring arm 2*.
A finger piece 12 is applied to the brush member B and provides a convenient means for obtaining a hold on the same with the fingers when opening the brush. When the brush is closed the bristles 7 are received in the compartment Oof thehandle, the projecting edges of the back 6 engaging the side plates 1, and end pieceB, thereby providing a dust-proof closure. In order to maintain thebrush in a sanitarycondition and prevent it from becomingsour or infected, antiseptic carrying strips l f are arranged with- 1 in the compartmentC, said strips extending within grooved portions 15 of the partition 5 and end piece 3, thereby enabling the strips to be readily slipped into and out of position, but holding them securely against displacement when the brush is closed. These strips 14; have a hollow formation, being filled with antiseptic material 16, and being perforated on their inner sides, as indicated at 17.
The tooth paste is preferably packed in a small tube or container 17 which is of a suitable size to fit within the compartment I) of the handle. Spring arms 18 are arranged upon opposite sides of this eompartment D and constructed to have a resilient engagement with the paste containing tube 17 for the purpose of holding the same'securely in position and preventing rattling thereof when the hrush'is packed. A wing 19 projects from the pivot plate 9 of the brush member in a spaced and parallel relation to the shank 8, being arranged to extend under the neck 17" of the tube 17 when the latter is in position within the handle and the brush is collapsed, as indicated by Fig. Upon opening the brush, however, this wing 19 will engage the neck'of the tube 17 and swing the same upwardly into such a position that it can be readily grasped by the fingers and manually withdrawn from the handle. This is indicated by the dotted line position of the brush member on Fig. 3. Provision is thusniade for carrying a supply of tooth paste, and also for keeping the brush fresh and sanitary at all times.
I claim:
1. A folding tooth brush including a hollow handle formed with a brush receiving compartment, antiseptic receiving strips fitted removably at the sides of the brush receiving compartment, a brush, a shank carrying the brush and pivotally connected to the handle so that the brush can be folded against the handle and received within the compartment when not in use.
2. A folding tooth brush including a hollow handle formed witha brush'receiving compartment, antiseptic receiving strips removably arranged at the sides of the compartment and adapted to be withdrawn through the mouth of the compartment, and a brush element formed with a bristle carrying head and a shank, the shank being pivoted upon the handle so that the brush can be folded against the handle and the bristles housed within the compartment when not in use, the head then closing the mouth of the compartment and retaining the antiseptic receiving strips in position.
3. A folding tooth brush including a hollow handle formed with a brush receiving compartment having corresponding grooves in the opposite ends thereof, antiseptic receiving strips arranged at the sides of the compartment and formed at their ends with ribs which are loosely received within the grooves, the stripsbeing removable'through the open side of the compartment, and a brush element formed with a bristle carrying head and a shank, the shank being pivoted upon the handle so that the bristles can be swung into the brush receiving compart ment when not in use, the head then closing the compartment and serving to hold the antiseptic receiving strips in position.
4:. A folding tooth brush including a hollow handle formed with a brush receiving compartment and a paste tube receiving compartment, a brush formed with a shank terminating in a plate which is pivoted within the handle at oneend of the paste tube receiving compartment, the'briish being adapted to be foldedinto the brush receiving compartment, and a wing projecting from the pivot plate of the shank in a substantially spaced and parallel relation to the shank, said wing being adapted to engage the cnd of a paste receiving tube to lift the tube out of the compartn'lent when the brush is opened. 1
5. A folding tooth brush 'ii'icl'uding a hol lo'w handle formed with spaced side pieces,
a partition subdividing the hollow handle into a brush receiving compartment and a paste receiving compartment, a brush element including a bristle carrying'head and a shank, the shank terminating ina plate which is pivoted between the spaced sides of the handle so that the brush element can be folded against the handle with the bristles housed within the brush receiving compartment, and a wing projecting fromthe pivot plate of the brush element in a spaced and parallel relation to the shank, said wing being adapted to engage the end of'the paste receiving tube'to lift thesanie out of its compartment when the brushi's opened.
In testimony whereof I have sig ned my name to this specification in the-presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLPH H. HENDRICKSON.
Witnesses: ETHEL BABCOCK, H. WV. BLICHF'ELDT.
