Patented June 1,5, 1920.
lppHeeton led Octobez' 20, 1919. Serial No. 331,844.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Ronn'r H. Lumi-:R- IiAL, u citizen of 'the United States, and a esident of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, nd State of Connecticut, have invented ceriin new and useful Improvements in Toothrushes, of which the following is a speciliation.
The present invention relates to brushes nd has for an object to provide an iniu'oveditooth, brush of the type in whit-h rovision is made for carrying dentifrice in hat part of the device which serves as the iandle.
Brushes known as fountain brushes, ns ieretofore made, have usually been provided vith a dentifrice container, carried in fixed osition in, or upon, the brush handle. In lu'h'struotures the container has usuallv een positioned at a distance from the bristle lead and the dentifrice has been eondueted o the bristle bend by :1 tubo either formed n the brush shank or made separate. Such nbes easily heroine ohstrueted in use, and ire generally unsanitary and objeetionalile. fl the dentifrii-e mntainer were positioned lose to the bristle head to avoid the use of i long Confini-ting: tube, the container would nterl'ere with the use ot', the brush.
The present invention avoids the use of a 'onduetingf tube and at the same. time avoids he interferenee with free use of the brush x-' the eontniner blv innltinzgr the ('ontainer n-nnlble toward und from diseharging posi- Yion. ln the preferred embodiment of the nvention a eontainer is slidable toward the n'istle head to diseharge dentifriee onto the iris-lle head. and slidable from the bristle `wad to retraeted position to leave the bristle head free and unobstruz'ted in use.
'l`he invention will be better understood from the followingr speeifimition whieh diould be rend in connection with the ao onipanying drawings i'orn'iing.; a part here irl and 1n whirh: i
Figure l is a neutral longitudinal section of a tooth brush eonstrueted in aeeordance with the invention. the bundle which rarries dentifriee being shown moved to its forward position on the lorush shank and a rover being shown in position to protectthe brush;
Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, the brush and handle being shown in extended position ready for use, and the cover being removed;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a side view of ythe `cover.
In the construction illustrated, the handle, 1, is hollow1 to inelose the dentifrice. Preferably it is so constructed that a container ot' some type already on the market, may be inserted bodily into the carrier and easily positioned for immediate use, as, for example, a Collapsible tulle, 2, of standard type and size. Suitahle provision may be made for compressing,r the tube to extrude dentifrire hy providing an opening 3, in one side of the hollonY handle. Preferably an extruding plate l, is inserted within this openiner so as to Forni. in effort, a movable side otthe hollou4 handle. The inner eiid t the handle is provided with a hole 5, through which the end t' ol' the eollapsible tube pro- `er'ts und by n'hieh it is held in position. Jlhisl opening ma); be threaded as shown, in order more rigidly to support the tube and to hohl it in rorreet position to discharge direetlj; onto the renter of the bristle head. The outer end oi the handle is elosed by a rap '7, which is l'rietionally retained in plaee.
The handle is slidably mounted upon the shank 9. in snob manner that it may be slid forward to discharge dentifriee direetly onto the bristle head 9, or rearwardly away from the hristle head to n. position permitting' eonvenient use of the brush without interfen ent-e by the handle.
The bristle head may he of an)Y desired type. preferably. however. it eonsists of a ventral row of Short bristles l between rows of longer bristles ll upon hoth sides. rl`his arrangement accomplishes two funrtions: the dentifrieo is more readily retained upon the brush when projeeted into the trough so formed ond. also. the row of short liristles permits the nozzle of the dentifriee eontainer to he positioned closer to the shank T. thus facilitating a more compact and less enmbersome construction. lt is to he noted that. in noeordanee with the present invention, dentifrice is disehargeddirectiy on to the face of the brush, that is to say, with out passing through nn unsanitary conducting tube, formed in the shank of the brush or otherwise to discharge among the bristles. I thus avoid this unsanitary feature which is eon'nnon to many types of fountain brushes as heretofore devised.
'fn order to hold the handle in either its; forward or rearward position on ille shank, a spring detent ifi is secured in a slot 14 in the shank and is engaged by a detent serew l5 in the handle to hold the parts in either extreme position of adjustment.
The brush may he iolded by .pushing the handle to its forward position adjacent the bristle beadj and a eover lo. may be pro-V vided to stip over the bristle` head to prov teet the same when folded. The dentifrice tube is closed by the removable rap l? whirl] ordinarily serves as a rlosnre for snrh tubes. 1f desireth'the (cover 1li may be n'iade to lit over the hollow handle so that when the brush is in esta the rover is not laid aside to be forgotten and lost. lli the over is to be so applied, holes4 in should be provided through which the tube nia)F be roxnnessml. When the rover is applied to Vthe folded. brush it overlies the bristle head. (li-v` holes lo permitting!J ventilation ol` the bristle head.
I claim:
1. In Combination with a tooth brush having a bristle head of a holding member slidably mounted on the brush for niovenient in the general direction ol the length ot' the brush toward and troni the bristle i headA` Said member being` adapted to rumorA ably carry a dentifrice container with its discharge opening So positioned that when the member is moved toward the bristle head, the dentifrice may he discharged troni the container directly on to the fare ol the bristles.
2. In combination with a tooth brush ha v ilngIr a. bristle head, of a` dentifrice container' haring a discharge opening; said rontainer being mounted for sliding movement in the general diret-tion ot the lel'igth of the brash toward end from the bristle head so as lo bring the discharge opening of the ciontainer in position for discharging the dentifriee directly from the eontainer on to the bristle head when in its forward position.
Il. lin a toothbrush the rornbination with a bristle head and a shank of a handle sld ably mounted on said shank, a dentifrice container rarried by said handle and having a discharge opening so positioned that when the handle is slid to its forward position dentifrice may be disffharged directly en to the {"aee of the hristle head and a detent lor holding said handle and shank in adjusted positions.
l. ln a tooth-brueh the eoinhination with a bristle head and a shank ol' a hollow halb die slidably nionntrd on said shank adapted to honse a dentifrice tnhe Vwith its nipple projecting forwardly tlnfough the inner end of the handle toward the ln'intle lieznl, one side of said handle heilig movable inwardly against the dentilfrire tubil toeatrndtdentiF trier therefrom.
Vln a toothdnush the combination with a bristle head haring a row of relatively short bristles between two rows of relatirel)v long bristles ol' a dvnti'rhe rontainer mounted for sliding movement toward and from the brush lo brin; the discharge openingF ol" the Container to a position to diseharge dentifriee onto said short hl'istles, substantially as described.
o, ln a toothvln'ilsh the ronilnnation with a shank and a bristle head eoinprising a. row of rrlatirelli` short bristles extending longitlnlinalli.v thv-wol. ot a` dentit'rire containing*t handle slidahl)Y mounted on said shiinlt, and arranged when in its forward position to lisrharge dentifricio direi-,tly onto the tare of the row ol' short bristles.y substantially as desrrlbed. i
7. ln a Jfountain toothbrush the combination with a shank and a bristle head of e hollow handle slidably mounted on said shank toward and from the bristle head roinln'ising a easing having a threaded opening: in the end toward the bristle head to receive the threaded nippleof a collapsible tube and open at its opposite end and on one side, a Closure for said open end and a movable extrnding plate in the open side, substantially as and for which purpose described.
H. ln a tooth brush the combination with a shank havingy bristles projecting from one side thereof forming a bristle head, of a handle slidahle on said shank toward and from the bristle head eonstrneted and ai ranged to carry a dentil'rire tube with its diseharge end spaced from said shank and positioned substantially in line withvthe faee of said bristle` head wher-elly when said handle is slid to its forward position adjaeent to the bristle head. dentifriee maybe `discharged onto said bristle head.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand.
