WILLIAM A. a. IQIOISINGTON, or DALLAS, oaEeoN.
STEM-CLIPPING DEVICE FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PICKERS.
' Application filed January 5, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLLAM A. J. HOIS- INGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Polk and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stem-Clipping Devices for Fruit and Vegetable Pickers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fruit and vegetable picking device adapted to sever the stems of fruits, vegetables, flowers or the like, rapidly and with a minimum of effort upon the part of the user.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in thedetailed description which now follows:
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention, and,
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, 5 designates a thimble like body adapted to fit upon the finger of the user. may be closed as shownat 6 or it may be open if'preferred. A U shaped member 7 comprising legs 8 and a transverse connecting web 9 has its legs secured to the sides of the body 5 at such an angle as to throw the connecting web 9 to an angle with respect to the top of the body portion and that edge of the web which lies farthest from the top of the body portion is sharpened to form a cutting edge 10.
By placing the device upon the finger with the knife edge facing toward the palm or front of the hand a person may rapidly sever the stems of fruits, flowers and the smaller vegetables which greatly facilitates the picking of the same. The space beneath the blade 9 furnishes the necessary clearance to permit of the most eflicient operation.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have illustrated a structure adapted to readily sever the stems of Specification of Letters Patent.
The end of this body Patented July 20, 1920.
Serial No. 349,560.
the larger vegetables such as pumpkins, squash, melons and the like. This device comprises a pair of finger receiving bodies 5 that are connected by a U shaped member 7 the legs 8 of which are secured to the outer sides of the said thimbles and the transverse connecting portion of which lies at an angle with respect to the said bodies or thimbles and is sharpenedto provide a cutting edge 10 This not only provides a structure of such size as to afford ample clearance for the thicker stems but permits the operator to use two fingers for the manipulation of the same so that the necessary force may be imparted to the structure to efficiently sever the stems.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that the invention includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim is v V 1. A device of the character described comprising a thimble-like body portion adapted to fit upon the end of the finger, a U shaped member the legs of which are secured to the opposite sides of the body portion and the transverse connecting portion of which extends across the end of the body portion and lies in spaced relation thereto to such an extent as to permit the passage of the stem of .a fruit therebetween, said transverse connecting portion comprising a flat bar, which lies at an angle to the end of the body portion, that edge of said bar which lies farthest from the body portion being sharpened to form a cutting edge.
2. A device of the character described comprising aqthimble-like body portion, a
U shaped member the legs of which are secured to the opposite sides of the body portion and the transverse connecting portion of which lies in spaced relation to the end of the body portion and at an angle thereto and extend thereacross, one side of said connecting portion being sharpened to form a cutting edge.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pair of thimble like members, a U shaped member the legs of which are secured to the outer sides of said thimble like In testimony whereof I aifix my signature 7 members and the connecting member of in presence of two Witnesses.
which extends across the ends of the thimble v like members and lies at an angle thereto, WILLIAM A' HOISINGTON that edge thereof which lies farthest from Witnesses: the said thimble like members being sharp- FRED 1L. HARRIMAN, ened to form a cutting edge. e J. N .VHELVGZERSQN:
