To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM GLATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toothbrushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in tooth brushes havinga novel form of handle adapted for receiving tooth powder.

An important object of this invention is to provide a tooth brush which, when the closure or cover is applied to the same, resembles a fountain pen so that the brush may be conveniently carried in ones pocket.

A further object of this invention is to provide a tooth brush having a pivotally mounted brush head adapted to beswung to one side of the longitudinal center of the handle when it is desired to use the same.

A further object of this invention is to provide a tooth brush of the class described having a handle provided with. interfitting inner and outer sections .or tubes having openings adapted to be brought into registration for dispensing the tooth powder contained within the inner tube.

A further object of this invention is to provide a tooth brush of the class described which is neat in appearance, desirable in use and cheap to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent, during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates the improved toothbrush which, as illustrated in Fig. 1, resembles a fountain pen when closed. In the manufacture of the improved tooth brush herein described, the same may be constructed from hardened rubber, celluloid, imitation ivory,

or any other suitable material, though it is believed that hardened rubber is admirably adapted for this purpose since it is intended to have the tooth brush appear as a fountain pen when closed to enable the same to be conveniently carried in ones pocket.

Specifically, the brush includes a cylindrical body 6 which forms the handle of the brush and which is exteriorly screw-threaded at its forward end so that an interiorly screw-threaded hollow cylindrical closure or cover 7 may he detachably secured thereto. The hollow cylindrical closure 7 is provided with a spring'clasp 8 having a pair of clips 9 engaging the side of the closure for scour-- ing the clip in position. Through themedium of the spring clip 8, the device may be securely held within ones pocket, as is usual with a fountain pen.

As illustrated in Fig. 2, a tooth brush head 10 is provided at its rear end with a shank 11 threaded into a cylindrical attaching member 12 at a point spaced outwardly from the longitudinal center of the same so that when the brush is rotated on the axis of the shank 11, the bristles 13 of the same will be extended laterally of the handle so as to permit the insertion of the bristles into the mouth. The connection between the shank 11 and the cylindrical attaching member 12 is sufficiently snug to prevent accidental rotation of the brush so that the brush will not turn while within the mouth. The closure 7 is of elongated cylindrical formation and has its closed end 14 provided with a centrally arranged aperture or vent 15 which allows air to circulate about the bristles of the brush so that the bristles may dry after being used even though arranged within the closure 7.

As illustrated in Fig. 2, the cylindrical attaching portion 12 is exteriorly screwthreaded, as indicated at 18, and is threaded into the upper portion of an inner tubular section 19 having snug contact with the side walls of the outer cylindrical member 6.

The outer and inner cylindrical members 6 and 19 respectively are provided in their lower end portions with apertures 20 and 21 which are adapted to be brought into registration for dispensing a'quantity of tooth powder 22 carried within the tubular member 19. The inner tubular member may be rotated with relation to the outer tubular member by engaging and rotating a pair of lugs 2% extending upwardly from the upper side of the member It will be noted that when the closure 7 is applied, access to the upstanding lugs 24 is impossible and the discharge apertures 20 and 21 are therefore prevented from being brought into registration until the cover is removed. This prevents the accidental loss of powder from the tube 19.

In addition to forming an attaching member for the brush, the member 12 also forms a closure plug for the inner tubular member and is adapted to. be removed when it is sired to replenish the supply of tooth powder.

With referenceto the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be observed that a tooth brush constructed in accordance with this invention may be carried around in ones pocket as easily as a fountain pen and by reason of the fact that a supply of tooth powder is contained within the handle, it is notnecessary to have a separate powder container. V

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

' 1. A tooth brush including an elongated handle, a cylindrical attaching member threaded within the forward portion of the elongated handle, a brush having a shank, secured to said cylindrical attaching portion, and a cover threaded on said elonber secured within the forward portion of I the inner tubular member of the handle and connected to the shank of said brush, and a closure secured to said handle and receiving said brush.

3. A tooth brush including a cylindrical handle of elongated formation having inner and outer interfitting tubular sections provided with discharge apertures adapted to be brought into registration, a pair of lugs carried bythe forward end of said inner tubular member, a tooth brush having a shank, a combined closure plug and attaching member of cylindrical formation threaded into the forwardportion of said inner tubular member and connected to the shank of said brush, and a hollow closure of cylindrical formation having its forward portion interiorly screw-threaded and engaged with the forward portion of the outer tubular member of the handle and inclosing said brush and said lugs.
