Be it known that I, Lno E. EVSLIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the boron h of Manhattan, city, county, and State of ew York, have invented a certain 'new and useful Toothbrush, of which the following is aspecification.

My invention relates to toothbrushes, and

has for its objects to produce such a device in which the brush proper may be separated from thehandle for the purpose hereinafter mentioned, and wherein the brush when in position on'the handle, will be securely held in position and prevented from rotatlng relatively to the handle.

A further object of the inventlon is to provide a structure, of the character herein described, which is extremal simple in com stru'ction, reliable and eflicient in its purpose, and inexpensive to manufacture.

The end of the rod opposite the head is screwthreaded' for; engagement with the nut 2. The major portion of the rod is of rectangular cross-sectlon and'of ribbon-like form. The rod ispreferably of more or less flexible material such as steel, and preferably is given a permanent bend at a short distance from the head end. The bend in-therod and its flexible nature will facilitate the passage of the rod around the bend 5. The head 12, when the rod isin position, will rest in a socket 12 in the end of the brush member 6.

The brush member may be constructed of paper pulp, the same being properly treated so as to be water proof.

Instead of forming the socket 9 in the brush member 6, the perforation 10 may extend entirely through the member and the elasticity of the rubber of the member will permit the member to move over the extension 4 and the softness of the rubber of the member will permit the head 12 of the rod to become embedded in the member and prevent injury tothe teeth or soft parts of the month by the head 12, in which case the socket l2 'may be omitted.

The frictional engagement of the member 6. with the extension- 4, togethenwith the" rectangular cross-section of the rod, will prevent rotation of the member relatively to the handle and 'brush'ng elements will always be presented at the proper angle.

The extension 4 ma be of circular crosssection, as shown in ig. 3, and the frictional engagement of the member with the extension may be relied upon to prevent rotation of the member.

have also illustrated the member 6 as of the usual form and material, such as bone, ivory, hard rubber, celluloid, etc., and with the usual bristles carried thereby.

-I desire to have it understood-that the rod may be made of a shape other than rectangular, if desired.

The head 12 of the rod may be constructed of a material, such as celluloid, which will not cause injury to the mouth, or it may be covered by a cap 12 of soft rubber or other suitable material, as shown in Fig. 5. When it is desired to remove the member,
