' ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. HoLLowAY AND HAROLD E. BURWELL, or M noan, ooimncncum COMBINED BRUSH. AND SUPPLY-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN E. HOLLOWAY and HAROLD E. BURWELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Milford, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Combined Brushes and Supply-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined brushes and supply holders for containing material intended for use in connection withsaid brushes, and especially, although not exclusively, to combined tooth brushes and dentifrice containers, certain features of the invention however relating to the supply holder or container per 86, independently of its connection with the brush.
The invention has for an object to provide a combined toothbrush and dentifrice container or the like of compact form which will keep the brush and dentifrice in clean and sanitary condition, and which is conveniently arranged for use in connection 'with the standard packages in which dentifrice is usually marketed.
Another obj ectof the invention is to provide an improved holder for containers, and particularly for collapsible tubes of the type generally employed to hold tooth paste and similar material, said holder having means for conveniently ejecting a determined quantity of the contents of the tube, said ejecting means 0 crating to collapse the tube and belng of suc 1 a nature as to be easily operated and to permit the tube to be completely collapsed so as to discharge all of its contents.
With the foregoing and other objects in view we have devised the improved combined brush and supply holder which we will now describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which: K
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing the contents of the container being discharged'upon the brush. 7
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the brush head. attached to the combined holder and handle in position-for use.
Fig. 3 is alongitudinal, section showing the means for inclosing and protecting the brush when not in use.
Fig. 4: is a detail viewshowing severalof the parts of the device disconnected from one another. 1
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 20 1921 Application filed March 23, 1921.
Serial No. 454,716.
Fig. 5 is a detail. view showing a col-,
discharge nipple of the device.
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the means for collapsing the tube and thereby ejecting or discharging its contents.
Fig. is a section on the line 7-7, Fig. 6.
15 denotes a brush head having bristles 16 and a short shank 17 formed with an enlarged end 18 provided with a threaded openlng or socket 19. 20 denotes a holder for material to be used in connection with the brush, said holder in accordance with one feature of the invention, and as herein shown, comprising a casing for inclosing a container in the form of a collapsible tube 21 having the usual exteriorly threaded outlet mpple 22. 23 denotes a nipple provided at its inner end with an annular flange 24, said nipple being interiorly threaded at its inner end for attachment to the. threaded outlet nipple 22 of the tube 21 and having an exteriorly threaded outer end 29. to engage the threaded opening 19 in the brush head. 25 denotes a thimble having a threaded end 26 (see Fig. 4) to engage exterior threads 27 on the open forward end of the holder 20, said thimble having an opening 28 through which the forward end 29 of the nipple 23 projects and a shoulder 30 to engage the flange 24 on said nipple and clamp the same against the end of the holder 20. The thimble 25- is preferably provided with a knurled annular rib or head 31 whereby said thimble may be readily unscrewed from the casing 20 to permit withdrawal of the tube 21 and nipple 23 and the connection and disconnection of said last named parts. 32 denotes a ed, when said cap is forced over said thimble, to expand the yielding open end of the latter and snap into the corrugation 33. The cap 32 may, if desired, be provided w1th a ring or loop 40, by which the device may be suspended when not in use.
The holder 20 is provided with a longitudinal slot 35 in which is guided the stem 36 of an operating knob or finger piece 37 located at the exterior of said holder, the inner end of said stem 36 being in threaded engagement with a substantially ovoid tube collapsing me er 38. Said collapsing member, while rou ded to avoid injury to the tube, is in effect wedge-shaped with the thicker portion disposed toward the rear end of the holder 20 and of less diameter than said holder. 39 denotes a leaf spring having an opening to receive the stem 36 and interposed between the finger piece 37 and the exterior surface of the holder 20, said spring normally holding said finger piece elevated and the collapsing member 38 in engagement with the top of said holder, as shown in full lines in Fig. 6. The stem 36 engages the collapsing member 38 at a slight inclinationto the axis of the latter and at a point slightly forward of the center thereof, so that by depressing the finger piece 37 against the tension of the spring 39 the forward end of said member 38 may be depressed substantially into engagement with the bottom of the holder 20, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6.
In order to insert a tube of tooth paste, the thimble 25 is unscrewed, and the nipple 23 removed and attached to the outlet nipple 22 of'said tube, as shown in Fig. 5. The tube 21 is then inserted into the holder 20 through the open forward end of the latter, and the thimble 25 replaced, thereby retaining said tube in said holder and clamping the flange 24; of the nipple 23 to the end of said holder, as above explained. The brush head is normally attached to the threaded forward end 29 of the nipple 23, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and consequently constitutes a closure for the tube 21, the holder 20 in turn, constituting the handle of the brush. When the brush is to be used, the brush head is detached and reversed, and the finger piece 37 pushed forwardly, thereby causing the collapsing member 38 to press upon the rear end of the tube 21 and squeeze out the desired quantity of paste through the nipple 23 and upon the brush, as shown in Fig. 1. Thereafter the brush head is replaced and the brush used in the usual manner, after which the cap 32 may be applied to inclose and protect the brush until it is to be used again. As the contents of the tube 21 are used the finger piece 37 is pushed farther and farther forward, the collapsing member 38 exerting a wedging action upon said tube and collapsing the same progressively from its rear end forwardly. This operation is an easy one which can readily be controlled to regulate the amount of paste discharged with considerable nicety. In order to insure the complete collapse of the tube and the complete discharge of all of its contents, the member 38 may be pressed downwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6 to exert any desired degree of pressure upon the tube, being at the same time moved forwardly, and thereby completely flattening said tube against the Wall of the container 20.
Having thus described our invention, we claim v 1. A brush comprising a supply holder constituting a brush handle and having a nipple adapted to engage the outlet nipple of a collapsible container, and a brush head having detachable connection with the first mentioned nipple and constituting a closure therefor.
