The present invention relates to an extensible handle or use especially on paint brushes, although useful for other purposes, and an object of the invention is the provision of a handle extension having a telescopic connectionV with the brush or implement handle, so that the extension handle can normally be retracted for the ordinary use of the brush,`and permitting the extension handle to be withdrawn, in order that a longer reach can be had with the brush, for convenience when painting from a ladder, or elsewhere, when the reach with the ordina-ry handle is too short.

Another object is the provision of an extension handle or stem fitted slidably in the brush or main handle and novel means between the main and extension handles for securing them in either nested or extended position.

It is also an object of the invention to provide such a. handle device which is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, as Well as being thoroughly practical and ellicient. f

-With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimedit being un- 4derstood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing fromr the spirit of the invention.

The inventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan View of paint brush embodying the improvements, the main handle and other portions bein shown in section, and the extension han le being in retracted position.

Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the extension handle projected, and portions being shown in elevation.

As shown 1n the drawing, the improvements are embodied in a paint brush having the usual head 3 and handle 4. In carryino' out the invention, the handle 4 is provided with a longitudinal bore 5 extending from the end thereof to a point adjacent to the head 3. The extension handle or stem 6 is slidable in said bore longitudinally'of the main handle 4, so that the handles can be nested together, as seen in Fig. 1, or extended, as seen in F ig. 2. In order to fasten the extension handle 6 in its extended or projected position, the inner end portion thereof has an enlarged threaded portion 7, and the outer end portion of the bore 5 has acontracted threaded portion 8 into which the portion 7 can be screwed when the handle 6 is pulled outwardly. The handle 6 has a reduced threaded portion or stud 9 at its inner end projecting beyond the portionl 7 v to screw into the threaded socket- 10 with which the handle bore lis provided at the inner end of the bore 5. The threaded portions 7 and 9 are reversed, one being righthanded and the other left-handed, as well as the threaded portion 8 and socket 10.

A bushing 11 is fitted on the extension handle after said handle is inserted into the bore 5, by screwing the portion 7 through the threaded portion 8, and said bushing is screwed into the end of the handle, thereby serving as a guide for the handle as well as. a stop for the contact of the4 portion 7, as seen in Fig. 2, to prevent the extension handle being completely withdrawn from the handle bore.

As a means for conveniently turningthe handle 6, a knob 14 has a shank 12 secured in the outer end portion of the handle 6, after the bushingll is slid onto said handle, and the shank 12-is fastened to the handle 6 by'means of a rivet 13 or the like.

' Ordinarily, when the brush is used in the customary way, the extension handle 6 is slid into the handle 4 and by turning the knob 14, the portion 9 is screwed into the socket 10, as seen in Fig. 1, thereby securely holding the extension handle in place. Should it be necessary or convenient to have a longer handle,the extension handle 6 can be projected, by turning the knob 14 to unscrew the portion 9 from the socket 10, thereby permitting the extension handle to bepulled outwardly,l and when the portion 7 strikes the threaded portion 8, the handle 6 is turned in the proper direction to screw the portion 7 outwardly into the portion 8. against the bushing 11, thereby fastening the extension handle firmly in extended position, so that said extension handle can be grasped for manipulating the brush. After the use of the extension handle has passed, it can again be unscrewed from .t-he portion 8 and slid .inwardly and fastened' as before, to be used when again'needed.

Having thns described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A main handle having, a bore extending from one end, andan extension handle slidable in said bore to be partly withdrawn from and nested within the main handle, each of the handles having reversely screwthreaded portions so that the handles can be screw-threaded together in either position thereof.

2. A main handle having a bore extending from one end, threaded portions near the opposite extremities of said bore having reverse screw-threads, and an extension handle slidable in said bore and having reversed screw-threaded portions to screw into the aforesaid threaded portions when the extension handle is withdrawn from the main handle and nested in said main handle.

3. A main handle having a bore extending from one end, a threaded portion near said end, and a threaded socket at the opposite end of said bore, and an extension handle slidable in said bore having threaded portions to Screw into the aforesaid' threaded portion when the extension handle is withdrawn from the main handle and to screw into said socket when the handles are nested.

4. A main handle having a bore extendingr from one end, a contracted threaded portion at said end, and a threaded socket at the opposite end of said bore, and an extension handle slidable in said bore having an enlarged threaded portion at its inner end to screw into the aforesaid threaded portion when the extension handle is withdrawn from the main handle, said extension handle having a reduced threaded portion at its inner end to screw into said socket when the handles are nested.

5. A main handle having a longitudinal bore extending from the end thereof with a contracted threaded portion at said end and a reduced threaded socket at the opposite end of said bore, an extension handle slidable in said bore having an enlarged threaded portion at its inner end to screw into said contracted threaded portion when the handles are extended, and having a reduced threaded portion at its inner end to screw into said socket when the handles are nested, and a bushing fitted on said extension handle and secured to said end of the lnain handle for the contact of said enlarged threaded portion to limit the separation of the handles.
