JOSEPH A. RAYDER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPLICATOR BRUSH.
Application filed August 31, 1922. Serial No. 585,408.
To (ill whom it may conce'mt:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. RAYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Applicator Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to applicator brushes having a controllable feed to the brush proper consisting of a collapsible tube, such as are used for shaving, painting, varnishing and analogous purposes.
is to provide an applicator brush having a more or less collapsible container rovided with an ejector nozzle adapted to e ectively project all the required amount of soap or other substance desired for a particular application clear of the discharge outlet into the bristles of the brush.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an applicator brush of the character referred to, the container lportion whereof serves when collapsed or compressed to eject the requisite amount of substance to be applied at any one time, means being provided in connection therewith for cutting off the feed therefrom to the brush during the process of application.
A still further object of my invention is to irovide an applicatorbrush of the type reerred to which comprises a minimum number of parts, the same being simple in character, easy to manufacture and assemble, while of a serviceable and reliable character for the purposes had in view.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as will be more clearly apparent from the following description, my invention con sists essentially in the novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of arts hereinafter fully described, illustrated by the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings, and more specifically defined, by the sub-joinedclaims. p I
In the drawings Figure l is a partly sectional longitudinal view of an applicator brush embodying one form of my present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary central section through the brush head and connected container, the same being drawn to an enlarged scale for a clearer illustration of the functioning of my novel applicator brush; and
Figure 3 is a similar enlarged fragmentary sectional view of a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings and in accordance with the embodiment of my invention illus trated thereby a collapsible foil container of appropriate material is designatedby the v numeral 4, the same being closed at one end 5, and adapted for rolling up by means of a. slotted key 6 in the Well known way. This container or cylinder 4 is formed with an integral screw threaded neck portion 7 and it is shouldered at 8 for a purpose later on explained. It is also to be particularly noted that the container or cylinder screw threaded neck portion 7 is formed with an axial and conical extension 9 projecting from the convex end part 10 thereof, and said conical extension 9 and neck portion 7 are provided with a longitudinal tapered passage 11 there-' in, said tapered passage 11 terminating at its outer end in communication with outwardly inclined radial ducts 12 for a purpose later on explained. I
Removably fitting the aforesaid screw threaded neck portion- 7 is the brush head 13 which is concaved at 14 and of appropriate dimensions to snugly seat upon theaforesaid convex end part 10 and shoulder 8 when screwed thereon, as will be clearly understood on an examination of Figure 1 more particularly. This brush head 13 is cupped, or dished out'at 15 to receive the bristles or brush proper 16, and it is centrally formed with an integral inverted funnel shaped portion 17 of an internal taper or bore 18 corresponding with the exterior taper of the above described axial andconicaI extension 9 on the neck portion 7 In some instances or' cases where the user of mynovel a plicator brush prefers to use a tube of su tance other than that supplied in thecontainers supplied by me and where such a container 4' is of the Ol'dlnary or standard type provided with a screw threaded neck 19-Figure3-from which I From the foregoing description it .will
be readil seen that by slightly unscrewing the bras head 13 a desired quantity of soapor other substance. contained in, the foil container 4 or 4" can be readily ejected through the tapered passage 11 and radial ducts 12 into the bore 18 of the funnel shaped part 17 whence it will exude through sired in the well known manner.
the open or outer end thereof centrally into the bristles of the brush 16, whereupon it can be applied to the part or parts dellt is to be particularly observed that before the application of the soap or other substance is made to the part or parts under treatment the user will re-scrcw the brush head 13 tight upon its seats 8 and 10 which will insure a clean ejection of said soap or other substance out of the inverted funnel shaped portion 17, and in order to-further insure effective operation of the device in this connection ll make the point or apex 21 of the axial and conical extension 9 of a dimension to be projected slightly beyond the open end of the' inverted funnel shaped portion.
17 when the parts 13 and 4: or 13 and 20 are screwed together out of use. It will, of course, be readily understood that where the attachment 20 isused it will-firstly be screwed tight upon the neck 19 of the tube 4 so that the manipulation of the brush head 13 will not effect its displacement under ordinaryconditions. Still further it will be readily seen that by my invention 1 have made an im ortant advance in the art whereby a perfectly sanitary applicator brush results, as a very slight turn of the brush head 13 will suffice for' the ejection of whatever amount of the soap or substance from the container 4 or 4" is required, while the peculiar formation and co-related disposition of the parts 9 and 17 efiectively prevents any of said soap or other substance Leeann from collecting or lodging, in the tapered bore 18, whereas the apex 21 always insures a. clear outlet therefrom. 1
An examination of the drawin s and foregoing description will fully clarify the advantages inhering to my novel structure of applicator brush as well as its obvious uses other than the specific form set forth, and it will be further readily understood that while I have described practical embodiments of m present invention the same is susceptible o modification, and the rightis therefore hereby reserved tomake such.
reasonable variations therein as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my lnvention, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, .an applicator brush having a base portion provided with a screw threaded recess and having a conical passage in communication therewith, a resilient receptacle in treaded engagement with said base portion, a conical extension on said receptacle adapted to be dis osed in close contact with the interiorxo the aforesaid conical passage, the apexof said extension being substantially coextensive with the apex of the conical passage when these two elements are in contact whereby the aforesaid conical passage may be completely closed by the aforesaid extension, the said conical extension being provided with one or more passages for communica tion between the interior of thereceptacle and the aforesaid conical passage, and means to compress said receptacle.
2. An .article of manufacture consisting JOSEPH A. RAYDER.
