FRANK L. @REVELL/fl., D`
Application filed November 30, 1920. Serial No. 27,421.
To ZZ 107mm t may concern:
Fe it known that ll, FRANK L. CniNnLLA, a citizen ot the lUnited States, residing at Virginia, in the county oi St. Louis and State olf F/iinnesota, have invented a new and use'l'ul Fosthole-ligging uliit7 of `which the tollowing is a specification.
rllhis invention relates to post hole diggers, the object being to provide an inipleinent consisting` oia combination of tools, each of which is adapted to peribrni a different 'function in the act oit digging a hole, the several parts so constructed as to be .interchaingeable with the handle, 'the latter preferably being built up in sections, whereby it may be lengthened according to the depth of the hole. the several sections being interchangeable.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Fig. l is an end view ot the digger;
Fig. 2 is a side view ot the di gger;
3 is an end View of one of the handle sections;
l is a side .view of one oit the sections;
Fig. 5 is an end plan view thereof;
Fig. 6 is an end view of one of the sections;
Fig. i is a side view oi one of the short sections of the handle;
Fig. 8 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 9 is a front view of the chopping-` bit;
Fig. l is anend View oi the interchangeable top ot the handle;
Fig. ll is a side vieivoiE the interchangeable handle;
1 2 is an end view thereof;
Fig. 13 is an end vieiv or". the choppingbit;
Fig. la is a side vieiv ot the choppingbit;
Fig. l is a side view of the inoil;
Fig. 16 is a front vienr oi the inoil.
As disclosed in Figs. il and 2, the cutting blade preferably consists ot a substantially lil-shaped ineinber a, the parallel edges or Which are adapted to taper slightly toward the bottoni.. and serve to retain the ground While the digger is being lifted out of the hole. the inner end ot this ineinber a, preierably provided with a screiv-tlneaded ineinber Y), and a shoulder o being provided at the bottom oil the screw-thread to take up the charge when in use. y
The letter Z indicates the lfirst section of the handle, Which is ot sufficient length for ordinary purposes, the ends of this member Z preferably being screw-threaded as at c, e, whereby the section is secured to the cuttingblade. Received upon the end oi this meniber ai is a member f as shown in Fig. l1, acting as the top oit the handle when one section only is being used. lt it be desirable to lengthen this handle, according to the depth oit the hole. an intermediate section g may be first attached to the section al. rllhis section ,r/ preferably is provided at one end with the external screw-threads 7i, and at the opposite' end with internal screw-threads z', whereby said section g may bel attached to the member CZ and the niember )nay be attached to the member g. The rnenibers f and f/ serve to lengthen the handle accordin to the depth oi the hole being dug.
Disclosed in. Figs. l5 and T6 is a inoil which may be attached to the handle, when it is desirable to pick loose lumps of hard ground or rocks, Which :may be encountered in digging the hole. y
Disclosed in Figs. 9 and le is a choppingbit 7c which likewise is adapted to be attached to the i sectional handles, this tool serving as a chisel which is used for cutting oil roots, trees, or breaking any roclrs which may be encountered in the process of digging. l claim:
l.. A post hole digger comprising a di ggerblade ot substantially lil-shaped cross section, the outer parallel edges thereof tapering from top to bottom, and provided at its inner end with a screw-threaded portion, al handle adapted to be detachably secured to said screw-threaded portion, said handle consisting ot one or more sections.
2. A post hole digger comprising a digger blade substantially lul-shaped. in cross-section, the outer parallel edges thereof tapering troni top to bottoni., and provided at its inner end -with. a` screw-threaded portion. a handle adapted to be detachably secured to said digger, said handle consisting ol:` a plurality oi detachable sections comprising a main section, an intermediate section. and a top portion.
