ORNAMENTAL HANDLE AND METHOD OF PRODUCING SAME.
Application filed ember t, 1922. Serial No. 592,663.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FELIX Knzrznwsiri, a citizen of Poland, residing at Jamaica, 1n the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Handles and Methods of Producing Same, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certaln new and useful improvements in ornamental handles and method of producing the same and has particular reference to a handle particularly designed for use in connection with hand implements such as paper cutters, scissors or souvenirs of this general character.
The primary object of the inventlon is to provide an ornamental handle for an implement of the above typewherein a strip, such as a sheet of paper is provided'with a name or pictorial representation to be suitably se- -cured to a transparent plate with the name or pictorial representation viewable therethrough with the plates subsequently secured to opposite sides of the backing member of $5 a handle with a finishing layer or coating covering the adjacent edges of the connecte members to present a smooth and even finish for the handle.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described,
shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational. view of a paper cutter or envelope opener, the blade of which is provided with an ornamental handle constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 shows side and edge elevational views of a paper strip provided with a name or ictorial representation,
*igure 3 shows side and edge elevational views of the transparent plate to which the figured sheet is secured,
Figure 4 shows side and edge elevational titl] parent plate,
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view showing the connected sheets and transparent views of the connected name strip and transplates secured to the backing member of the handle,
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view taken on line VI-VT of Fig: 1 showing the coating for the adjacent edges of the backing member and the connected elements secured thereto, and
Figure 7 is an edge elevational view of the handle portion of the implement shown in Fig. 1, partially in section, showing the name or pictorial strip positioned be-' tween the backing member and the transparent plate, I
The article produced by the method hereinafter set forth includes an implement having a blade portion 1, a shank 2 and a handle portion 3 constituting a backing member. A transparent-plate 4 of celluloid or similar material is secured to each side of the backing member 3, while an intermediate strip 5 provided with a name or pictorial representation is interposed between the backing member 3 and the transparent plate 4, the name or pictorial representation being viewable through the transparent plate, while the adjacent edges of the backing member and plate are covered with a coating 6 of a suitable paint or like material to present a finished and smooth exterior surface for the handle.
The method employed in producing the ornamental handle consists in providing sheets of material such as paper or the like as indicated by the reference numeral 5 in Fig. 2, the same being of a configuration similar to the backing member 3 of the handle and having provided on one face thereof a name or pictorial representation 5. A transparent plate 4:, as shown in Fig. 3 of a shape or design similar to the sheet 5 shown in Fig. 2 has said sheet suitably secured thereto as indicated in Fig. 4: with the name or pictorial representation 5 viewable through the transparent plate as illustrated. The connected elements a and 5 are then placed upon the backing member 3 of the h andle, the name or pictorial strip 5 being placed adjacent the backing member with the transparent plates 45 positioned outwardly thereof as illustrated in Fig. 7, the elements being suitably connected together as by a transparent cement or the like. A coating 6 is then provided on the adjacent edges of the backing member. and connected plate sections as shown in Fig. 6 to present a smooth and finished surface for the handie, the completed article being shown in Fig. 1 with the name ior pictorial representation 5 clearly Viewable through the handles, wherein a handle has a name or pictorial representation embodied therein,
the method of forming the handle consisting in securing the sheet containing the name or pictorial representation upon a transparent plate, uniting a pair of transparent plates to opposite sides of a handle member and then coating the edges of the connected members.
2. As an article of manufacture, an ornamental handle embodying a backing member, transparent plates, sheets having names or pictorial representations thereon secured to the transparent plates and combinedly secured to opposite sides of the backing member and a coating for the edges of the connected members.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
FELIX KRZYZEWSKI.
